Written by Terzi\u0107, Vladimir Arsenijevi\u0107 and Bojan Vuleti\u0107, the film follows a school trip to the Bulgarian mountains three weeks after a classmate, Andrij, dies by suicide, leaving his best friend, Tsosta (Jovan Gini\u0107), grieving and vulnerable at the hands of his apathetic classmates and powerless teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe teachers start to behave normally, and then we realize that the film is not about bullying, but about violence that became the everyday language of young people,\u201d Terzi\u0107 says. \u201cThree weeks after is not enough time to process all of these things, and especially for young kids. We discussed [with the actors] how when tragedy happens, life must move on. But oftentimes nothing truly changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTo cast the group of 24 kids, Terzi\u0107 met with over 500 different actors, and wound up choosing mostly non-professionals. Instead of having them read lines, Terzi\u0107 simply asked about their experience at school.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat was when Terzi\u0107 realized how close the story hit home for many of them: \u201cThere were two young people who told me they are villains in that peer violence. They are very mature thinking about that, realizing what they did when they were young. And now when they see violence, they interfere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=3618\">Sky to Buy ITV\u2019s Media Arm for Up to $2.1 Billion: \u2018This Is a Defining Moment for British Media\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen acts of violence occur on screen in \u201c3 Weeks After,\u201d such as when Tsosta gets kicked to the point of bleeding on the side of the road, cinematographer Damjan Radovanovi\u0107 remains at a distance \u2014 a choice informed by Terzi\u0107\u2019s focus on the people in society who stay \u201cneutral\u201d and choose \u201cnot to interfere\u201d during times of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cYou can compare to today how we watch violence \u2014 from the side, from above, on our phone. There is some kind of space between that is protecting us and the violence itself. Violence becomes spectacle, something that is fun to watch. And then we realized this is our language of the film,\u201d Terzi\u0107 says. \u201cWhen I realized I had kids that can work together, we started to shoot long takes and started to improvise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn Bulgaria, where the film takes place, Terzi\u0107 says conversations about suicide often happen far too late. And with \u201c3 Weeks After\u201d world premiering in the Czech Republic, he will get to see first-hand how different audiences resonate with the mature themes.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe are already in some kind of fire, but we don\u2019t realize. We don\u2019t notice the fire. We somehow stay immune because everyday language is the language of violence,\u201d Terzi\u0107 says. \u201cIf someone will get out of the cinema and think about the movie, it would be a very good starting point.
