\nChristopher Nolan\u2018s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is based on Homer\u2019s ancient Greek epic, which dates back to around the 8th or 7th century\u00a0BC. As a result, some moviegoers were surprised when the film\u2019s various trailers let it slip that Nolan\u2019s characters speak contemporary English dialogue in mostly American accents. The creative decision sparked intense discourse on social media, one that Nolan probably wasn\u2019t too surprised by it turns out. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to the Los Angeles Times ahead of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d theatrical release this month, Nolan said that as the film\u2019s screenwriter he wanted to prioritize \u201clanguage that has emotional not intellectual meaning to people.\u201d This is why the characters in Nolan\u2019s \u201cOdyssey\u201d speak in contemporary English dialogue and not Homer\u2019s words.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was maybe being na\u00efve, it might bite me on the ass, but I wanted an earthy narrative. To me it was a no-brainer,\u201d Nolan said of his decision. <\/p>\n

\n\tNolan also felt it was a no-brainer to cast the movie with major star power, from Matt Damon and Anne Hatahaway to Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Jon Bernthal and more. The director noted that his characters \u201care mythological figures, iconic in some ways,\u201d so \u201cI wanted to cast it big, get the finest bunch of actors\u201d because their familiar faces would help a contemporary audiences feel at home. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d had to navigate a few other social media firestorms before its release. Criticism was lobbied at the armor design in the movie, which many on social media felt resembled Batman\u2019s more modern-looking Batsuit.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze,\u201d Nolan said in defense of his design while talking to Time magazine earlier this year. \u201cThe theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it and then use sulfur\u2026 With Agamemnon, Ellen [Mirojnick], our costume designer, is trying to communicate how elevated he is relative to everyone else. You do that through materials that would be very expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNolan also defended the casting of rapper\u00a0Travis Scott\u00a0as a bard, whose appearance in an early trailer caught some by surprise. He said: \u201cI cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.\u201d<\/p>\n
