\n\tAnna Hathaway said on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast that she spent a full week channeling Harley Quinn before meeting Christopher Nolan for \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d because she was convinced he was courting her to play the Batman villain. It wasn\u2019t until two hours into their meeting that Hathaway discovered it was a meeting for Catwoman.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHere\u2019s the thing that worked in my favor: she\u2019s a chameleon,\u201d Hathaway said. \u201cSo, I knew I was auditioning for\u2026 I was meeting with Chris [Nolan] for the female role in the Batman trilogy, the next installment. I thought that I\u2019d gamed it out, because I was just like, \u2018It can\u2019t be Catwoman because Michelle Pfeiffer was so iconic\u2026 [gasp] It\u2019s going to be Harley Quinn!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo, I spent a week developing demonic Harley Quinn energy. I was wearing weird jester flats and a striped top,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd then, about two hours into our conversation, Chris is like, \u2018So, the part\u2019s Catwoman,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Transform!\u2019 So, I just then decided that I was like, \u2018Well, this top is very sensual.\u2019 And I was going to be very\u2026 like a psychopath. I changed personalities like a psychopath.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHathaway won the part and went on to earn acclaim for playing Selina Kyle\/Catwoman in \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d which marked her first collaboration with Nolan. The duo has since worked together on \u201cInterstellar\u201d and the upcoming \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d Hathaway has long credited Nolan with saving her career amid backlash around her Oscar win for \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables.\u201d Public opinion soured on Hathaway at the time, and she infamously googled herself and discovered the top search question was: \u201cWhy does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of people wouldn\u2019t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online,\u201d Hathaway now told Vanity Fair in 2024. \u201cI had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I\u2019ve had in one of the best films that I\u2019ve been a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHathaway was referring to the role of NASA scientist Dr. Amelia Brand in Nolan\u2019s 2014 space epic \u201cInterstellar.\u201d Now they are back together for \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d in theaters July 17 from Universal Pictures.<\/p>\n
