\nRami Malek shed a tear as he soaked up the love in the Palais for his deeply emotional turn in Ira Sachs\u2019 \u201cThe Man I Love,\u201d which earned an eight-minute standing ovation Wednesday. The film is notably one of only two American features competing for the Palme d\u2019Or at this year\u2019s festival (the other being James Gray\u2019s \u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d starring Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson).<\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Sachs, who co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Mauricio Zacharias, \u201cThe Man I Love\u201d is set in New York City during the late 1980s as a theater world icon, Jimmy (Malek), confronts his mortality following an AIDS diagnosis. The synopsis reads: \u201cFaced with the death that awaits him, his thirst to live and create, to desire and to love one last time, is stronger than anything else.\u201d The movie is also described as a \u201cmusical fantasia of a city under duress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStarring alongside Malek in the film are Tom Sturridge, Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. \u201cThe Man I Love\u201d marks Ira Sachs\u2019 return to competition at Cannes after his 2019 drama \u201cFrankie,\u201d starring Isabelle Huppert. The filmmaker is more closely associated with Sundance, where many of his recent features like \u201cPassages\u201d and \u201cPeter Hujar\u2019s Day\u201d premiered.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Malek, who won the best actor Oscar for his performance as Freddie Mercury in \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d Sachs\u2019 drama marks his first time headlining a Cannes competition movie. Malek appeared in two films last year, \u201cNuremberg\u201d and \u201cThe Amateur,\u201d and had a small supporting role in \u201cOppenheimer\u201d in 2023.<\/p>\n
