\n\tAuteurs are out in force in this year\u2019s writing and directing Emmy races and so are veteran pilot and episodic helmers. Female helmers had a big showing in noms for drama series, documentary and variety shows. <\/p>\n

\n\tAs ever, the nominees in writing and directing categories for the annual Emmy derby are a bellwether for the creative community in terms where they see heat and excellence when it comes to TV programs. It\u2019s a creative popularity poll that sometimes is at odds with the popular vote delivered by viewers and consumers in the U.S. and beyond. Lucia Aniello (\u201cHacks\u201d), Vince Gilligan (\u201cPluribus\u201d), Steven Conrad (\u201cDTF St. Louis\u201d), Lee Sun Jin (\u201cBeef\u201d) and Brad Ingelsby (\u201cTask\u201d) are the five power hitters who nabbed both writing and directing noms in series categories.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the comedy series field, the writing noms were dominated by auteur forces who are on both sides of the camera for their shows. The nominees for comedy series director, on the other hand, leaned toward seasoned helmers and previous nominees. The documentary\/nonfiction race includes Mariska Hargitay for her HBO documentary \u201cMy Mom Jayne\u201d and Lawrence Kasdan for his study of Martin Short, Netflix\u2019s \u201cMarty, Life is Short.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong drama series, Salli Richardson Whitfield put a notch in Emmy\u2019s record books by becoming the first Black woman to receive two directing nomination in the same category in the same year. Richardson Whitfield\u2019s range is demonstrated in her nomination for HBO\u2019s period drama \u201cThe Gilded Age\u201d and for HBO\u2019s \u201cTask,\u201d the earthy crime potboiler starring Mark Ruffalo. <\/p>\n

\n\tRichardson Whitfield\u2019s will vie against Hannah M. Culpepper for Hulu\u2019s \u201cParadise.\u201d \u201cThe Pitt\u201d star Noah Wyle nabbed a directing nom for his work behind the lens on episode \u201c12:00 PM.\u201d The much decorated \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d creator Gilligan is nommed for the pilot of Apple TV\u2019s \u201cPluribus.\u201d And Saul Metzstein is up for the \u201cScars\u201d installment of Apple TV\u2019s \u201cSlow Horses.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAmong comedy directors, the list includes familiar names: Lucia Aniello (\u201cHacks\u201d), Randall Einhorn (\u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d), Mary Lou Belli (\u201cThe Ms. Pat Show\u201d), Hiro Murai (\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d) and Christopher Storer (\u201cThe Bear\u201d). HBO\u2019s quirky dark comedy \u201cThe Chair Company\u201d is represented with a mention for Andrew DeYoung.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix\u2019s \u201cBeef\u201d took two of the four nominations for limited series direction. One went to showrunner\/creator Lee Sung Jin, the other to Jake Schreier. Jason Bateman is in the mix for the Netflix crime drama \u201cBlack Rabbit\u201d while showrunner Steven Conrad is up for HBO\u2019s \u201cDTF St. Louis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLiz Patrick of NBC\u2019s \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d and Yvonne De Mare of CBS\u2019 \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert\u201d were nommed in the variety show category that now covers late-night variety fare. Andy Fisher is up for his work on ABC\u2019s \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe life of Mel Brooks, the trials of Sean Combs and the work of Martin Scorsese were among the subjects that drew documentary directing noms for Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio (\u201cMel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!\u201d), Alexandria Stapleton (\u201cSean Combs: The Reckoning\u201d) and Rebecca Miller (\u201cMr. Scorsese\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe roster of shows drawing nominations for reality directing was close to the list of top series nominees in the category. Bertram van Munster (\u201cThe Amazing Race\u201d), Cian O\u2019Clery (\u201cLove on the Spectrum\u201d), Nick Murray (\u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d), Anna Moulaison (\u201cTop Chef\u201d) and Ben Archard (\u201cThe Traitors\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the scribe tribe, four of the six nominees for comedy series writing went to those who are also front and center as stars: \u201cAbbott Elementary\u2019s\u201d Quinta Brunson; Tim Robinson for \u201cThe Chair Company\u201d (with Zach Kanin, Lisa Kudrow (with co-creator Michael Patrick King) for HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Comeback\u201d and Paul W. Downs (with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky) for HBO Max\u2019s \u201cHacks.\u201d Katie Dippold, creator and showrunner of Apple TV\u2019s \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d and Anthony King of Prime Video\u2019s \u201cJury Duty Presents: Company Retreat\u201d took the other two bids.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor drama series writing, showrunners ruled the roost. \u201cThe Pitt\u201d claimed two noms, one for Kirsten Pierre-Geyfman and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and one for Valerie Chu. Gilligan of \u201cPluribus,\u201d Will Smith of Apple TV\u2019s \u201cSlow Horses,\u201d Brad Ingelsby of \u201cTask,\u201d and Debora Cahn (with Peter Ackerman) of Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Diplomat\u201d are all in the running.<\/p>\n

\n\tMegan Gallagher is a newcomer to the limited series field with a writing nom for Peacock\u2019s \u201cAll Her Fault.\u201d Lee Sun Jin of \u201cBeef\u201d and Conrad of \u201cDTF St. Louis\u201d are contenders as are Gate Rotter and Daniel Pearle for Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Beast in Me\u201d and Mike Makowsky for Netflix\u2019s \u201cDeath By Lightning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety series writing bids went to the staff of \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live,\u201d \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert\u201d and HBO\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight With John Oliver.\u201d Standup comedians Chris Fleming, Nikki Glaser and Wanda Sykes all nabbed Emmy bids for variety special writing for their standup specials \u201cLive at the Palace\u201d (HBO), \u201cGood Girl\u201d (Hulu) and \u201cLegacy\u201d (Netflix). Also in the mix are the staff of Disney+\u2019s \u201cThe Muppet Show\u201d and ABC\u2019s Academy Awards telecast.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor telling the story of \u201cThe American Revolution\u201d as the nation marks its 250th birthday, longtime Ken Burns collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward picked up his 10th career Emmy nomination in the nonfiction program category. \u201cDaily Show\u201d correspondent Jordan Klepper and others are up for the Comedy Central special \u201cJordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse: Give The Man A Prize.\u201d And Apple TV\u2019s \u201cThe Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy\u201d grabbed a nom for writers David Reilly and Christine Rose.<\/p>\n
