\n\tOn July 9, \u201cThe Boys\u201d writer and \u201cArchive 81\u201d creator Rebecca Sonnenshine fulfills a dream she\u2019s had since she was 10 years old, with the debut of her \u201cLittle House on the Prairie\u201d adaptation on Netflix.<\/p>\n

\n\tA lifelong Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, Sonnenshine \u2014\u00a0who recently had success with the word-of-mouth blockbuster \u201cThe Housemaid\u201d \u2014\u00a0 pitched the streamer and show producers hard when she found out a \u201cLittle House\u201d reboot was in the works. She landed the job not in spite of her work on supernatural, horror and genre series like \u201cThe Vampire Diaries,\u201d but because of it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think they were a little skeptical, but also had been thinking, \u2018Oh, maybe we should look for a genre writer to give this some shape,’\u201d Sonnenshine tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cAnd at the end of the meeting, the producers are like, \u2018Wow, you know a lot about \u201cLittle House on the Prairie!\u201d\u2018 Yes, I do, I know a lot about it. I didn\u2019t even have to reread the books. That\u2019s how much they\u2019re in my brain. I can just talk about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSonnenshine, who previously worked with Netflix on her now-canceled drama \u201cArchive 81,\u201d sold them on her idea, which was a much larger scale version of the story than was told in the beloved NBC classic starring Melissa Gilbert.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was really pursuing it \u2014\u00a0these are the first books I ever read,\u201d Sonnenshine says.<\/em> \u201cThis is my origin story. Guys always talk about, \u2018My origin story is Superman, I read the comics,\u2019 all that stuff. And so my origin story is \u2018Little House on the Prairie\u2019 \u2014 and that\u2019s how I got to be writing \u2018Archive 81.\u2019 [\u2018Little House\u2019] just really shaped me. The books are so cinematic that they really gave me this brain as a kid of seeing things in pictures, and I think it really led me into being a filmmaker in general.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Sonnenshine\u2019s \u201cLittle House\u201d still centers on the story of a young Laura Ingalls (Alice Halsey) as she and her family \u2014 father Charles (Luke Bracey), mother Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald) and older sister Mary (Skywalker Hughes) \u2014 move from their home in Wisconsin to build a new life in Kansas, it focuses much more on the Indigenous people connected to the larger narrative featured in Wilder\u2019s actual \u201cLittle House\u201d book series, the Osage. In particular, it introduces the mixed-race Osage family, the Mitchells: husband and wife William (Meegwun Fairbrother) and White Sun (Alyssa Wapanat\u00e2hk) and their daughter Good Eagle (Wren Zhawenim Gotts).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs an adult, everything is different. Especially \u2018Little House on the Prairie,\u2019 it\u2019s all about the Osage,\u201d Sonnenshine says. \u201cThe Osage are all over that book, but we don\u2019t know them at all. And I thought, well, we have to know them. I have to figure out a way that we can know them, and how do you do that? Trying to create a family that parallels the Ingalls. I had to do a lot of research to figure out how to do that, and I did and we worked with a story consultant named Robert Warrior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite support from Netflix \u2014 the streamer has already ordered a second season of the show, which is now in production \u2014 when news of the \u201cLittle House\u201d reboot was made public in January 2025, Sonnenshine was faced with her first wave of criticism, led by\u00a0Megyn Kelly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNetflix, if you woke-ify \u2018Little House on the Prairie\u2019 I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project,\u201d Kelly\u00a0posted on X\u00a0while sharing the news of the Netflix reboot. <\/p>\n

\n\tMelissa Gilbert, who starred on the original \u201cLittle House\u201d for nine seasons and 204 episodes between 1974 and 1982, came to the rescue on Threads with a response: \u201cUmmm\u2026watch the original again. TV doesn\u2019t get too much more \u2018woke\u2019 than we did. We tackled: racism, addiction, nativism, antisemitism, misogyny, rape, spousal abuse and every other \u2018woke \u2018 topic you can think of. Thank you very much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut on the eve of the \u201cLittle House\u201d reboot premiere come renewed questions about what changes could be made to the series, which will focus much more heavily on the story of the Indigenous people who lives are affected by the arrival of the Ingalls and the other pioneers moving into their territory in the late 1800s in Independence, Kansas.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not even sure what \u2018woke\u2019 means to people anymore, to be honest,\u201d Sonnenshine says. \u201cI know what I think it means, which is the definition of it being aware and alert to social injustice and prejudice, in particular racial prejudice. So, when people say, \u2018I hope it\u2019s not woke,\u2019 I think, \u2018Really? Oh, that\u2019s interesting.\u2019 But I don\u2019t think people are using it in that manner; I think it\u2019s just become a catch-all word for things that I don\u2019t quite understand. If I had to sum it up, what people are afraid of is that something from their childhood will be portrayed in a way that scares them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSonnenshine is sticking with what she\u2019s \u201cbeen saying from the beginning,\u201d which is \u201cI feel like people are worried for no reason.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t feel like there\u2019s anything that people are not going to like,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re exploring some interesting issues, but I think that they would be interested in those, too. I think conservative people are really interested in Native American stories, honestly. When people watch the show, it\u2019s like, \u2018We want to know more about the Mitchells,\u2019 and that\u2019s kind of across the board. I think that they\u2019ll really like it. I think people just are afraid of whatever they\u2019re afraid of, and that\u2019s OK. But I honestly think that there\u2019s nothing to be afraid of and it\u2019s a story that will really resonate with everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s not lost on Sonnenshine that one of the ways audiences could connect with the show is through the wholesome, cozy, cottage-core, DIY vibes that are present throughout the \u201cLittle House\u201d reboot, and have become increasingly trendy in recent years. On the one hand, there\u2019s the very dark reality of what life and death looks like in a tale of survival on the prairie \u2014 and on the other, there\u2019s the Ingalls enjoying a pretty adorable homemade Christmas.<\/p>\n

\n\tSonneshine hopes that audiences can embrace the balance of that \u201cLittle House\u201d aesthetic without veering into tradwife discourse. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s fascinating to me. I am super crafty, like I come from a crafty family, and so for me, obviously, I\u2019m a non-tradwife,\u201d Sonnenshine says. \u201cI come from a family of doers, and I learned from my dad. He was a carpenter, he was a mechanic, he made solar panel prototypes, he invented computer programs. He was a gardener. He raised sheep and chickens, and he just liked to do things. And my mom was the same way. She sewed my clothes. She was a great cook. She would call it \u2018putting up\u2019 the vegetables. You\u2019re pickling vegetables, you\u2019re making jam, you\u2019re doing all these things that I don\u2019t feel like should be like cornered by tradwives. I like to do all those things. I\u2019m a great knitter, I\u2019m a great embroiderer.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe self-proclaimed \u201cnot a tradwife\u201d but bigtime baker and sewer says working with your hands like the Ingalls \u201cdoesn\u2019t have to be an all or nothing thing\u201d in the digital age.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnybody can pick up a book and learn how to bake something, or draw something, or plant a garden. Those things are not the exclusive landscape of tradwives or influencers, or any of those things,\u201d Sonnenshine says. \u201cI think what I want for people to just think about is, what little things would interest me that I could do with my hands and incorporate into everyday life?\u201d<\/p>\n
