At this pace, \u201cToy Story 5\u201d is primed to pass $1 billion and should eventually overtake 2019\u2019s \u201cToy Story 4\u201d ($1.07 billion) as the highest-grossing installment in Disney and Pixar\u2019s beloved animated franchise.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s currently the third-biggest Hollywood release of the year after \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d ($1.009 billion) and the Michael Jackson biopic \u201cMichael\u201d ($991 million). Since \u201cMario\u201d and \u201cMichael\u201d opened in the spring and have mostly winded down their theatrical runs, \u201cToy Story 5\u201d is expected to surpass those titles on global box office charts.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cToy Story 5\u201d opened in mid June and collected a franchise-best $160 million in its opening weekend. \u201cToy Story 4\u201d previously held the record for the largest start in the 30-year-old series with $120 million. The fifth \u201cToy Story\u201d also scored the second-largest animated opening weekend in history, behind only 2018\u2019s \u201cIncredibles 2\u201d with $182.7 million. Even without new installments to fuel interest, \u201cToy Story\u201d earns more than $1 billion annually in worldwide retail sales across consumer products, games and publishing.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAndrew Stanton, a Pixar veteran whose credits include classics like \u201cFinding Nemo\u201d and \u201cWall-E,\u201d directed \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d which grapples with the reality that kids would rather play with tech than toys.
