\n\t\u201cModern Family\u201d star Jesse Tyler Ferguson will make his Menier Chocolate Factory debut playing Truman Capote in Jay Presson Allen\u2019s \u201cTru.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRob Ashford directs the production, which opens Sept. 27 following previews from Sept. 19, and runs through Nov. 14.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTru\u201d arrives at the Menier on the back of a well-received New York staging earlier this year. Ferguson reprises the role he originated earlier this year in the play\u2019s first New York revival, staged at House of the Redeemer. The piece, built entirely from Capote\u2019s own writing, first reached the stage in 1989.<\/p>\n

\n\tSet in December 1975, the play finds Capote isolated in his New York residence, grappling with the fallout of a scandal that stripped him of standing among the wealthy social set he once cherished. Paul Farnsworth designed the production.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to bring this intimate production of \u2018Tru\u2019 to the Menier following its successful New York run,\u201d Ferguson said. \u201cThe audience response to this unique theatrical experience, and the chance to encounter Truman Capote up close, was incredibly rewarding. I\u2019m delighted that Rob Ashford and I now have the opportunity to share what we\u2019ve created with London audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had the great pleasure of directing Jesse in a staged reading of \u2018Tru\u2019 as a one-night-only charity benefit in Tangier, Morocco, in the summer of 2024,\u201d Ashford said. \u201cHe was mesmerizing. He captured the truth of the man, his humor and heartbreak. I\u2019m thrilled that we get the opportunity to further explore this great pairing of actor and character in London.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFerguson holds a Tony Award for playing the accountant Mason Marzac opposite Richard Greenberg\u2019s \u201cTake Me Out\u201d in its Broadway revival, a role that also won him the Outer Critics Circle Award. Onstage, he currently portrays King Herod in \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d at the London Palladium and recently made his West End bow in \u201cHere We Are,\u201d Stephen Sondheim\u2019s last work, at the National Theatre. Last summer, he took part in the starry revival of \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d that marked the reopening of the Delacorte Theatre in New York\u2019s Central Park. Ferguson is also known for playing Mitchell Pritchett across 11 seasons of ABC\u2019s \u201cModern Family,\u201d and he co-founded the LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization Pronoun, formerly Tie the Knot, with his husband Justin Mikita in 2012.<\/p>\n

\n\tAllen, who died in 2006, adapted \u201cThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,\u201d \u201cCabaret\u201d and \u201cPrince of the City\u201d for the screen, among other works, and was twice nominated for an Academy Award. Ashford\u2019s London credits include Olivier Award-winning productions of \u201cAnna Christie,\u201d \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire\u201d and \u201cParade,\u201d while his Broadway work includes a Tony Award for his choreography on \u201cThoroughly Modern Millie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe production adds to a busy stretch for the Menier, which is also readying \u201cMidnight at the Never Get\u201d for its home stage, sending \u201cEquus\u201d to Theatre Royal Bath, running \u201cThe Producers\u201d in the West End and staging \u201cSabrage\u201d at Lafayette London.<\/p>\n
