\n\tJeffrey\u00a0Wright opened up about the racist abuse of football star Kylian Mbapp\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Paraguay\u2019s loss to France at the World Cup, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla attacked him on social media, describing him as, among other things, \u201ca brute who had not learned to write.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLook at this bullshit. What is she talking about?! I mean, here\u2019s this guy who\u2019s one of the greatest football players in the world. It\u2019s obvious to anyone who\u2019s not a fucking idiot just by watching the man on the field, how significant he is as a player, how significant his contributions are to this game that the world loves. And he\u2019s a human being as well,\u201d he said during a roundtable interview at Karlovy Vary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd yet you have to hear this nonsense from this lazy-minded, self-aggrandizing, self-pleasuring people who are trying to derive some sense of self, some degree of power by thinking that they can be disparaging of him. They think they can somehow diminish how powerful he is on the field with their stupidity. It\u2019s just remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added: \u201cBut the thing is, France won 2-0 yesterday, and this is the key. If who you are is powerful, there\u2019s nothing they can do to stop you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m Black and for me, it\u2019s a political term. It\u2019s not a biological term.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nJean-Michel Basquiat also \u201cwon through the power of his work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tWright, who famously played the late artist in Julian Schnabel\u2019s \u201cBasquiat,\u201d will now return to his universe in Julius Onah\u2019s upcoming \u201cSamo Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe finished shooting last fall. Jean-Michel Basquiat is played by Kelvin Harrison Jr., and I just saw the film. He\u2019s astounding in the movie,\u201d he said while introducing \u2018Basquiat\u2019 at the fest. But this time, Wright will take on another role.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe represented is many things but at its core, he represented the power of freedom. The power of creativity. The power of being genuinely oneself and express that. He\u2019s an American artist who speaks to the core of what America wants to be. And that is the beacon of freedom,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWright also opened up about upcoming \u201cThe Batman: Part II\u201d and praised Matt Reeves\u2019 \u201crich\u201d interpretation of the famous franchise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cObviously, Batman is an iconic character. These characters have existed for so long \u2013 not because they\u2019re superficial, but because there are layers there. The stories are grounded in morality plays and Matt has really tried to use that. It\u2019s classic stuff,\u201d he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMatt fell in love with film through that golden era of American cinema. We would talk about \u2018Taxi Driver\u2019 and this lone character who feels one against society. He\u2019s translating this comic book story through something much more cinematically complex.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReeves has \u201cintense, almost childlike wonder\u201d about the franchise, he said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd he\u2019s got just boundless enthusiasm for it, and also for the craft of filmmaking. And he has a deep respect for film. It\u2019s a great framework for this stuff. The screens have gotten oversaturated with comic book stuff, and some of it I found unwatchable, frankly. But this is different than most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
