According to CNC estimates, French films accounted for 42.5% of admissions during the first six months, while U.S. films represented 47.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRather than relying on only a handful of blockbusters, around 20 films crossed the 1 million-admission threshold, including eight French titles, according to Comscore France managing director Eric Marti.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThat means there have been many successes, rather than just three or four isolated hits,\u201d Marti said, adding that \u201cthere is a very healthy balance between successful French films and successful American films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFrench family adventure \u201cMarsupilami,\u201d released by Path\u00e9, led the annual box office at the end of June with more than 6.1 million admissions. The other French titles in the first-half top 10 were Studiocanal\u2019s \u201cGuru\u201d and \u201cChildren of the Resistance,\u201d Gaumont\u2019s \u201cJust an Illusion\u201d and Path\u00e9\u2019s \u201cDe Gaulle: Resistance.\u201d They were joined by five U.S. releases: Universal\u2019s \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d and \u201cMichael,\u201d and Disney\u2019s \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d \u201cToy Story 5\u201d and \u201cHoppers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIndependent distributors also scored significant results with less predictable titles. Distributed in France by the indie distributor Le Pacte, the horror breakout \u201cObsession\u201d has already reached approximately 1.4 million admissions since being released on May 13, while \u201cBackrooms,\u201d released by Metropolitan FilmExport, stands at around 1.1 million since its June 17 rollout. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tMarti described the trajectory of \u201cObsession\u201d as particularly unusual, noting that it\u2019s \u201cgone well beyond all the usual boundaries of the genre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tComparing trends in recent years, Marti placed the first semester of 2026 on par with the first half of 2023, which had previously marked the strongest start to a year since cinemas reopened following the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe first half of 2026 ended on a particularly strong note, with more than 5 million tickets sold during its final week, only the second time the French market crossed that threshold this year. Admissions dipped around mid-March and again in early June, when the market reached its lowest point of the year, but both occasions the downturn lasted only briefly before business rebounded.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis capacity to rebound is extremely encouraging, because it shows at that as soon as the programming is there, audiences go to cinemas,\u201d Marti said. <\/p>\n<p>\nThe two-part historical epic \u201cDe Gaulle\u201d has become perhaps the most striking illustration of that appetite.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe first installment, \u201cDe Gaulle: Resistance,\u201d bowed with approximately 385,000 admissions during its first week. After declining in its second week, it rose 17% in its third and then jumped 71% in its fourth week to around 465,000 admissions \u2014 21% above its opening-week total.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe second opus, \u201cDe Gaulle: I Write Your Name,\u201d released only three weeks after the first, opened even more strongly and benefited from the momentum surrounding the initial film. Both movies have been side-by-side at the box office ranking in the top five. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tPath\u00e9\u2019s decision to release the two parts so closely together was an unprecedented gamble, but the strategy is paying off. The first film has passed 1.7 million admissions and is on track to exceed 2 million in the coming week, while the second movie could ultimately perform just as well, or even better, given the strong word-of-mouth and the summer momentum. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe French market has also performed better than most of its European neighbors.
