There\u2019s enough of us and of our family dynamics, but we\u2019re not making a documentary about our lives,\u201d says Kevin Bacon.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis may be for the best, as \u201cFamily Movie\u201d \u2013 shown at Karlovy Vary \u2013 follows the Smiths: a loving family that makes much-derided, low-budget horror films. They\u2019re in the middle of shooting another one when a real murder occurs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe were really interested in a family that makes horror movies together. After the pandemic was over and the strikes were over, we met some writers and gave them that pitch,\u201d says Sedgwick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDespite the ongoing \u201cnepo baby\u201d discourse, they found value in working together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cKevin\u2019s a really good actor. That\u2019s always a surprise,\u201d jokes Sedgwick, while he explains: \u201cWe didn\u2019t encourage our children to become artists. It\u2019s not that we said no, and we were happy to give them music lessons and be there for school plays or whatever. But we also knew that being an artist, or a creative person, means a lot of rejection. Nobody wants that for their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThey never watched our movies growing up and were on sets only when they were very little. That being said, in the old days, if your dad was a blacksmith, you were probably going to be a blacksmith too. We\u2019re people who make creative stuff, but if one of them was a doctor and another a lawyer or a plumber, we\u2019d still love them just as much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt was screenwriter Dan Beers who suggested making a slasher, recalls Kevin Bacon, who also directed the film.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe got zombies, an alien invasion and ghosts, but his pitch was the funniest. But there\u2019s a certain kind of catharsis that comes with watching someone get stabbed, and that catharsis can very quickly turn into laughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAfter all, Travis Bacon\u2019s favorite film of all time is \u201cHalloween.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t like \u2018Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u2019 all that much\u2026 Except the first one,\u201d he laughs. Kevin Bacon famously played in the 1980s classic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe appeal of slasher films is that they feel very real, you know? A masked figure could actually break into your home and chase you with a knife, and that\u2019s pretty terrifying. Also, violence can be hysterical. Recently, I was watching \u2018Terrifier 2\u2019 and I couldn\u2019t help but laugh hysterically at the absolutely ridiculous nature of what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe film \u2013 sold by The Gersh Agency \u2013 is full of inside jokes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a dog called Valentine, which was the character Kevin played in \u2018Tremors,\u2019 and Phil the goat is named after Black Phillip in [Robert Eggers\u2019 folk horror] \u2018The Witch\u2019,\u201d lists Sedgwick. Horror fans will surely appreciate it \u2013 and they are the ones still buying cinema tickets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI think horror fans are just film fans in general, and film fans like to see a movie the way it\u2019s supposed to be seen: in the theater,\u201d says Travis Bacon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s some kind of collective experience people enjoy in being scared together. You would think that would transfer to comedy, but it\u2019s just not the case right now. Us horror fans, we are there on the opening night, getting that special popcorn bucket.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe communal experience of horror is the greatest,\u201d agrees his father.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIf there\u2019s a big scare and everybody screams, the next thing they do is laugh. You will only get that in a theater.
