\nDepartment M has closed a transaction to acquire a significant stake in Neon, the Oscar-winning indie studio behind \u201cParasite\u201d and \u201cAnora.\u201d Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. <\/p>\n

\n\tTom Quinn, the founder of Neon and an indie vet who has had stints at Radius and Magnolia, will remain CEO of the company. Michael Schaefer, a partner in Department M, will become Neon\u2019s chief content officer, while Mike Larocca, another partner in Department M, won\u2019t move over to Neon but will join its board. <\/p>\n

\n\tJeff Deutchman continues as Neon\u2019s president of acquisition, production and development for film and Carina Sposato\u00a0joins\u00a0as Executive VP, Television. Both will report to Schaefer.<\/p>\n

\nVariety<\/em> broke the news that Department M was in talks to buy a stake in Neon in February. A consortium of private investors is believed to have backed Department M, which was financed by private investors when it launched in 2024. In a release touting the pact, Neon said The Friedkin Group, which has been a long-time backer, remains a significant shareholder and board member. The Friedkin Group is run by Dan Friedkin, who co-formed\u00a030West and founded Imperative Entertainment. Department M said it will contribute development assets and \u201cproduction ready projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNeon previously\u00a0explored a sale in 2022, but a\u00a0deal with investor Steven Rales, the businessman behind the production company Indian Paintbrush, fell apart. <\/p>\n

\n\tNeon\u2019s recent credits include Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value\u201d; Jafar Panahi\u2019s \u201cIt Was Just An Accident\u201d; Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d; and Park Chan-wook\u2019s \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d; and Ugo Bienvenu\u2019s \u201cArco.\u201d\u00a0It has also backed the horror film \u201cLonglegs,\u201d a massive box office hit that grossed nearly $130 million when it was released in 2025. Neon won its seventh consecutive Palme d\u2019Or this year with \u201cFjord,\u201d a drama that stars Sebastian Stan\u00a0and\u00a0Renate Reinsve and is expected to be an awards season player. <\/p>\n
