\nJay-Z did appear to promise far in advance that his \u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d 30th anniversary show would, in fact, be a celebration of the debut album that he dropped back in June 1996. That didn\u2019t stop him from pulling out all the stops \u2014 well, most of them, at least \u2014 during the first of his three headlining shows at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, setting off a string of performances to commemorate a pair of milestones (the other being the 25th anniversary of \u201cThe Blueprint\u201d) plus a bonus show billed as \u201cExtra Innings\u201d that, as of now, has a stadium-sized question mark hanging over what it will actually be.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Brooklyn native isn\u2019t wont to pass up an anniversary \u2014 think back to 2006 when he paid tribute to 10 years of \u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d with a Radio City show complete with a full orchestra \u2014\u00a0or make a mountain out of an already sizable molehill. The first of his Yankee Stadium gigs came a little over a month after the end of a dormant solo period when he gave a one-off, had-to-be-there headlining performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, where, backed by the legendary Roots crew, he toured his discography while paying homage to the hosting city via guest appearances from Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, Beanie Sigel, Freeway and more.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor his \u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d show, it wasn\u2019t entirely off-script \u2014\u00a0every song from the record was performed in one way or another \u2014 yet he turned the night into a Jay-Z history lesson, weaving in bits and bobs from other hits and bringing out a murderer\u2019s row of guests spanning his family (Beyonc\u00e9, Blue Ivy Carter) to friends and former foes (Nas, Jaz-O) in an effort to round out the world he\u2019d built three decades ago.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat began with his wife Beyonc\u00e9, absent from the Roots Picnic stage but front and center for the Friday show\u2019s opening at Yankee Stadium to handle Mary J. Blige\u2019s iconic hook on \u201cCan\u2019t Knock the Hustle.\u201d (Blige was, meanwhile, booked and busy performing at her Las Vegas residency.) Dressed in a pinstripe suit, Bey shocked the stadium with a megawatt appearance upfront, something usually reserved for much deeper into a show of this size.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat ensued was a jazzy, loose homage to the album that transformed him from a hustler into a honcho. \u201cReasonable Doubt,\u201d a record that banked heavily on tales from the streets as a springboard away from them, was performed almost entirely in sequence, with Jay backed by a live band and flanked on either side by fans on bleachers. Decked in a bomber jacket and the hat he made more famous than a Yankee can, Jay ran through \u201cPolitics As Usual,\u201d incorporating Frank Ocean\u2019s hook from \u201cMade in America\u201d before segueing into a freestyle that was a milder version of the one he kicked in Philadelphia. (He deflated the online controversy of selling \u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d vinyl at Target with classic Jay-Z wit: \u201cI don\u2019t listen to Twitter activists, they type, and I laugh at them \/ It\u2019s really no comparison.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n\tThere was speculation on what Jay-Z might do for \u201cBrooklyn\u2019s Finest\u201d to fill in for Notorious B.I.G.\u2019s verse: Would he have B.I.G. affiliates Lil\u2019 Kim and Lil\u2019 Cease handle the verses, or perhaps make it a call-and-response with the audience? He settled largely for the latter but also turned it into an homage to his former accomplice, setting Biggie\u2019s iconic verses against the instrumental for \u201cOne More Chance.\u201d The spirit of New York was alive and well across the show as Nas, famously sampled on \u201cDead Presidents\u201d and its sequel, emerged to perform \u201cThe World Is Yours\u201d and \u201cNY State of Mind\u201d as the beat from Jay\u2019s \u201cWhere I\u2019m From\u201d piped into the mix. There was even a coveted surprise appearance on \u201cBring It On\u201d from Jaz-O, Jay-Z\u2019s early mentor, who famously took issue with his protege as his star began to ascend. (The only true point deducted from the evening was Foxy Brown\u2019s absence on \u201cAin\u2019t No N\u2014,\u201d a single that situated Jay on club mixes early in the album cycle.)<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid renditions of \u201cCan I Live\u201d and \u201cD\u2019Evils,\u201d plus non-\u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d songs like \u201cJigga My N\u2014a\u201d and \u201cExcuse Me Miss,\u201d the most emotionally resonant moment of the evening came with Jay\u2019s daughter Blue Ivy Carter sitting behind the keys for \u201cFeelin\u2019 It,\u201d a record initially produced by Ski Beatz for Camp Lo before Jay snatched it up. It was perhaps the heart of the show, a generational bridge that showed how far Blue Ivy has come in the years she\u2019s grown up in the spotlight. She finessed the piano with ease, not a note missed; Jay-Z beamed like a proud dad, as expected.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show came to its natural conclusion with a picture-perfect, Big Apple moment where Alicia Keys joined Jay to perform \u201cEmpire State of Mind.\u201d But before that, Jay closed the \u201cReasonable Doubt\u201d set with \u201cRegrets,\u201d a track that unwraps the dark side of the hustler mentality. To persevere, he contemplates, he has to learn from the mistakes he\u2019s made to get to this point. We all live with regrets, Jay supposes; it\u2019s what you do with them, in the end, that makes them worthwhile.<\/p>\n
