\n\tRandolph Mantooth, known for playing paramedic Johnny Gage on the \u201cEmergency!\u201d TV series in the 1970s, died July 9 in Ventura. He was 80.<\/p>\n

\n\tMantooth broke out in 1972 when he was cast in \u201cEmergency!,\u201d which introduced the profession of paramedics to the public. He co-starred with Kevin Tighe in the popular NBC series which ran for six seasons, and performed most of his own stunts. <\/p>\n

\n\tHis brother said he died in a hospice facility after a long illness, according to the Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe played his \u201cEmergency!\u201d character Johnny Gage on other shows such as \u201cAdam-12,\u201d and remained an advocate for firefighters, paramedics and EMTs throughout his life.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter guest starring on shows including \u201cDallas,\u201d \u201cCharlie\u2019s Angels\u201d and \u201cThe Love Boat,\u201d Mantooth had a notable second act appearing in soap operas. He joined \u201cLoving\u201d in 1987 as Clay Alden, then spent two years on \u201cGeneral Hospital\u201d as Richard Halifax. He then returned to \u201cLoving\u201d for two more years. Among the other soaps he appeared on were \u201cThe City,\u201d \u201cAs the World Turns\u201d and \u201cOne Life to Live,\u201d as well as other shows such as \u201cCriminal Minds,\u201d \u201cGhost Whisperer\u201d and \u201cSons of Anarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMantooth was born in Sacramento; his father was of Cherokee and Seminole descent. He studied at Santa Barbara City College and earned a scholarship to New York\u2019s American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
After he was discovered onstage in New York and signed to a Universal contract, he began appearing on TV shows including \u201cIronside,\u201d \u201cThe Virginian,\u201d \u201cMarcus Welby, M.D.\u201d and \u201cThe Bold Ones.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe had been diagnosed with cancer in 2015.<\/p>\n
