\n\tThey\u2019re back! The annual rampage of genre filmmakers, industry, and fans through the cinemas and social hubs of Montreal has begun, as the Fantasia International Film Festival opens its 30th edition on July 16 with Nicolas Winding Refn receiving the Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award before hosting the Canadian premiere of his sumptuously visceral, trope-defying thrill ride \u201cHer Private Hell,\u201d a Neon titl.<\/p>\n

\n\tRefn emerged on the scene in 1996 with his influential feature debut \u201cPusher,\u201d marking Mads Mikkelsen\u2019s first big screen role, and \u2018Pusher 3\u201d had its North American premiere at Fantasia in 2006. His new feature, his first in a decade, hits North American big screens July 24.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cReturning to Fantasia 20 years after the \u2018Pusher\u2019 trilogy and receiving this award feels like stepping from black-and-white into color,\u201d Refn tells Variety<\/em> before the festival. \u201cIt\u2019s a reminder that the journey is still unfolding\u2014and it\u2019s only getting better from here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOver 18 days, Fantasia unleashes an omnivorous global selection of 119 features and 400 shorts in an array of core and sidebar sections, and hosts Fronti\u00e8res, its convivial four-day co-production market and networking event, which has grown into a must-attend branded genre market destination at Cannes and Berlin and is also launching editions in Tokyo and Toronto this year. It\u2019s also become an important spawning ground for Fantasia\u2019s own programming.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEvery company you talk to wishes they had more genre on their slate,\u201d Fantasia artistic director Mitch Davis tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cEvery generalist festival, including the big A-list festivals, have their midnight and genre sections, and also have genre in just about every other section of their lineup.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn the early days of Fantasia, we knew everything that was out or coming out but that has changed dramatically. What\u2019s interesting now is that we have this pipeline with 30 years of alumni who keep us up to date with everything that they have or know about in development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn that spirit, Vancouver-based Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, who emerged from a blockbuster year (\u201cFinal Destination Bloodlines\u201d) with a fistful of studio projects, revisit their indie roots with \u201cFreaks Part II,\u201d which premieres as Fantasia\u2019s closing film.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film picks up the story of tween-ager Chloe (Lorelei Olivia Mote), who can manipulate minds, and her mother (Amanda Crew) five years after the events in \u201cFreaks,\u201d the 2018 film that changed the writer-director duo\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have incredible memories of our first \u201cFreaks\u201d movie playing at Fantasia in 2019,\u201d Lipovsky tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cWe were blown away that there was a line around the block for our little Canadian indie, which opened a lot of doors for us. So to return to the best genre festival in Canada and premiere the sequel to all our fellow freaks at Fantasia is a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve always loved genre filmmaking, so it\u2019s exciting to see genre films taking over the mainstream,\u201d adds Stein. \u201cAudiences are more hooked on the fun theatrical experience of going to see genre movies in the theatre, sharing twists and surprises with a dark room full of strangers. It\u2019s exciting to have the festival journey begin in Canada, before continuing on to the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJane Schoenbrun\u2019s Queer Palm-winning slasher refresher \u201cTeenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,\u201d which screens July 17 and opens in North America in August, is generating the most excitement. \u201cPeople lost their minds when we announced it because Jane is the most exciting filmmaker of their generation, a real poet of the genre,\u201d says Davis.<\/p>\n

\n\tSchoenbrun and star Hannah Einbinder (\u201cHacks\u201d), who plays a filmmaker obsessed with rebooting an outdated slasher franchise and recasting its original final girl (Gillian Anderson), are hosting the screening and participating in a conversation the next day.<\/p>\n

\n\tAgnieszka Smoczy\u0144ska\u2019s (\u201cThe Lure\u201d) highly anticipated world-premiering dystopian thriller \u201cHot Spot\u201d (Focus), starring Noomi Rapace as a rebel cyber witch, is one of several high profile Fronti\u00e8res alums in this year\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s her biggest scale film to date, yet still the kind of film that only she could make\u2014radical and experimental and takes all kinds of gigantic risks with the audience,\u201d Davis says. \u201cIt\u2019s starts as a futuristic police thriller and cautionary tale about AI surveillance, then becomes a stream-of-consciousness fever dream that grows crazier and crazier\u2014she\u2019s a rock star to our audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOther notable Fronti\u00e8res alums include Andrea Corsini\u2019s \u201cFerine\u201d (formerly \u201cBeasts of Prey\u201d) which stars Carolyn Bracken (\u201cOddity\u201d) as an art collector overcome by violent primal urges and is one of two Fantasia films scored by legendary Italian film composer Pino Donaggio (the other is \u201cHer Private Hell\u201d); Canadian Tim Riedel\u2019s debut \u201cAncestral Beasts,\u201d a haunted-house story exploring intergenerational trauma; Australian Mia\u2019kate Russell\u2019s debut \u201cPenny Land Is Dead,\u201d an \u201980s-set summer revenge gorefest; and Minos Papas\u2019s \u201cMotherwitch,\u201d a folk horror filmed on location in an abandoned village in Cyprus.<\/p>\n

\n\tAside from \u201cFreaks Part II\u201d and \u201cAncestral Beasts,\u201d Canadian features premiering at Fantasia include: Casey Walker\u2019s \u201cHome Bodies\u201d (twins living alone in an automated house receive an androgynous humanoid as a Christmas gift); Angus Silver\u2019s coming-of-ager \u201cInsectasy\u201d; Ashlea Wessel\u2019s debut \u201cJunction Row,\u201d a creature feature starring horror icon Katharine Isabelle (\u201cGinger Snaps\u201d); Seth A Smith\u2019s surreal take on the housing crisis \u201cPermanent Damage,\u201d starring Stephen Dorff; and Michael Gabriele\u2019s Christmas horror comedy \u201cUnholy Night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHighlights of the popular Les Fantastiques week-ends du cin\u00e9ma qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois section include Wiebke Von Carolsfeld\u2019s world premiering chiller \u201cSomeone\u2019s Daughter,\u201d following a lawyer (Pascale Bussi\u00e8res) and her former and increasingly sinister client (Fran\u00e7ois Arnaud of \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d) who are stranded together in the wilderness; Louis Gobbout\u2019s \u201cLa Place,\u201d in which an altercation over parking escalates into eerie dimensions; and Harrison Houde\u2019s black comedy \u201cTight Lettuce,\u201d co-written with actor Dakota Daulby (\u201cFreaks,\u201d \u201cLonglegs\u201d), who plays a young man dealing with his father\u2019s drug addiction.<\/p>\n

\n\tDavis notes that Fantasia audiences have also evolved over 30 years. \u201cToday\u2019s young audiences are ready for films that are going to shake them up, films that they\u2019ll have to work with in a sense to engage with,\u201d he says. \u201cTimes of crisis and massive global anxiety are when genre cinema tends to percolate.\u201d<\/p>\n
