Maridue\u00f1a first portrayed the character in the 2023 film \u201cBlue Beetle,\u201d directed by Angel Manuel Soto.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn \u201cBlue Beetle,\u201d Maridue\u00f1a played Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who gains superpowers when an alien scarab latches on to him. It\u2019s a historic role, as Jaime was the first Latino superhero to lead a stand-alone film in the DC cinematic universe.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Variety<\/em> spoke with the actor after he had been cast in the role. Maridue\u00f1a explained that he\u2019s most excited to represent a Latino character. He said, \u201cThe only thing that is on my mind right now is just the fact that he\u2019s Latino. In the sequel, Superman is forced to team up with his adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) as they work to defeat an even bigger threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAlso set to appear are: Adria Arjona who has been cast as Maxima, an alien queen who has been both an antagonist and a potential love interest for Superman in the comics.
