\nGeorge Lucas has a bone to pick with Hollywood when it comes to focus groups and test screenings. The \u201cStar Wars\u201d creator, who walked away from the franchise in 2012 after selling Lucasfilm to Disney in a $4 billion deal, recently told\u00a0A Rabbit\u2019s Foot (via IGN) that Hollywood\u2019s over-reliance on focus groups has created studio movies dictated entirely by fans over filmmakers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t like focus groups,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cThe audience doesn\u2019t know what they want to see. If they don\u2019t like a character, that\u2019s interesting, and as a filmmaker I want to find out why. But when the studios hear that, they take the wrong message. They let the audience actually make the movie. Of course, now they go crazy with that. Now, it\u2019s all about what the fans think. That isn\u2019t how you make the movie. You make a movie by finding someone that knows how to make movies, that has a story to tell and is passionate about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou go to the movies because the stories move you emotionally,\u201d Lucas added about what should be the guiding light for films in development. \u201cArt is an emotional medium.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFocus groups and test screenings have become a routine step in the studio moviemaking process. Maggie Gyllenhaal notably revealed earlier this year that test screenings for \u201cThe Bride!\u201d took her to task over the movie\u2019s depiction of violence and sexual violence. James Gunn test screened \u201cSuperman\u201d and discovered that audiences opposed the moment when David Corenswet\u2019s Man of Steel decides to save a squirrel as Metropolis is being attacked by a rampaging Kaiju monster.\u00a0Gunn refused to listen.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe showed it to test audiences and some people did not like the squirrel,\u201d Gunn told Rolling Stone. \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018Why the fuck is he saving a squirrel? Why is he taking time out, saving a squirrel?\u2019 There was a cut where I cut it out and I\u2019m like, \u2018I really miss the squirrel. He\u2019s gotta save the squirrel.\u2019 In addition, there were also some geographic problems with where he ended up if I didn\u2019t have him fly over with the squirrel. So I put the squirrel back in despite the protestations of some of my people on my crew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLucas\u2019 interview with A Rabbit\u2019s Foot also included his thoughts on AI. Similar to other blockbuster directors like Peter Jackson, the \u201cStar Wars\u201d visionary is looking at AI in a more positive light when it comes to moviemaking. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cArtificial intelligence means it\u2019s much easier for us to make movies,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cIt\u2019s very much like sitting here saying, \u2018Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it\u2019s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there\u2019s all kinds of problems with them and pretty soon they\u2019ll be making them into tanks, and then they\u2019ll be killing people. It\u2019s terrible.\u2019 There\u2019s nothing you can do about it. That\u2019s progress, it\u2019s the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Lucas acknowledged there are risks that comes with AI, there are also solutions. He added: \u201cIf you want AI that tells you when something is fake and where it came from, AI can do that,\u201d he says. \u201cHumans can\u2019t, we\u2019re not that smart. The whole idea is you\u2019re a human being, you\u2019re responsible for what you say and what you do, and if you\u2019re doing something that\u2019s illegal you should be punished for that. Whatever you do, you should be recognized. It\u2019s just like real life.\u201d<\/p>\n
