\n\tSophie Simnett, the rising British star best known for Netflix\u2019s post-apocalyptic comedy drama \u201cDaybreak\u201d and Brit crime feature \u201cTwist,\u201d is set to star alongside writer-actor Jack Whittle (\u201cTony!\u201d) in \u201cThe Candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is a black-and-white silent comedy with a dance interlude, described as being in the style of the Chaplin era of filmmaking. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Candidate\u201d marks the feature directorial debut of Mark Bell, known for his Olivier Award-winning work with physical comedy and ensemble farce on \u201cThe Play That Goes Wrong.\u201d Composer Howard Goodall (\u201cBlackadder,\u201d \u201cMr Bean\u201d) provides an original score that continues the traditions of silent storytelling.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs per the description, the film is a \u201ccautionary tale of a na\u00efve dreamer who accidentally finds himself in a position of power. Mistaking power for purpose, he loses sight of everything that was once meaningful to him. Beneath its comedic surface, \u2018The Candidate\u2019 asks what we truly value in our leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSimnett will play a character called Love, who the filmmakers say is a \u201ctribute to the great leading ladies of silent cinema, bringing playfulness, wit, and joy to a world increasingly consumed by control. Her compassion provides the emotional heart of the film and acts as the conscience at the centre of its satire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is being produced by Over The Fence Films, whose credits include recent Berlinale silver bear winner \u201cEverybody Dig Evans,\u201d fellow Berlinale-bowing \u201cThe Education of Jane Cumming,\u201d Cannes\u2019 Directors\u2019 Fortnight title \u201cDouble Freedom\u201d and Sundance special jury prize winner \u201cEverybody to Kenmure Street.\u201d Production is scheduled for Autumn 2026.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a bold and ambitious film that places extraordinary demands on its performers \u2013 Simnett and Whittle both possess the expressive range, comic timing and natural chemistry that a silent feature demands \u2013 telling a story not driven by dialogue but by a language of movement and mayhem,\u201d said the producers. <\/p>\n
