As he prepared to present the 23 Spanish titles at this year\u2019s festival he received a standing applause from the whole of the industry audience at the unveil in Madrid. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith the three biggest upscale Spanish films of the year, \u201cThe Beloved,\u201d Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s \u201cBitter Christmas,\u201d and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo\u2019s \u201cThe Black Ball\u201d all selected for main competition at Cannes, this year\u2019s selection of Spanish titles for San Sebasti\u00e1n is slightly less obvious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBlack Ball\u201d screens in Perlak, however.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis is the first time, for example, that Romero and Bueso compete for the festival\u2019s Golden Shell.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat said, this year\u2019s lineup offers the chance for discoveries: both \u201c\u201cEsa soledad,\u201d from Javier Giner, director of Disney+ breakout series \u201cI, Adict,\u201d and \u201cEl mal hijo, from \u201cMoney Heist\u201d star Jaime Lorente, are debut features.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt will also allow directors who merit more attention to share a larger part of the limelight. Basque director David P\u00e9rez Sa\u00f1udo weighs in with by far his biggest films to date: historical serial killer thriller \u201cThe Harvester\u201d; after impressing with \u201cThe Laws of the Border,\u201d Daniel Monz\u00f3n returns to San Sebasti\u00e1n with \u201cPray For Us,\u201d a searing denunciation of on little known facet of Francoist repression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBehind a stunning lineup in series \u2013 \u201cThe New Years,\u201d \u201cLa Mes\u00edas\u00b7 and \u201cThe Anatomy of a Moment\u201d and \u201cSir\u0101t, \u201cThe Beloved\u201d and \u201cThe Black Ball\u201d in film, Movistar+ will have a strong presence at San Sebasti\u00e1n, producing or co-producing \u201cFive Minutes More\u201d and \u201cEl Castillo.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAtresmedia Cine back a clutch of selections this year. He pulled that off very well in 2023 with the horror-laced TV series \u201cThe Other Side.\u201d Here he turns to low-fi sci-fi in a dark, horror-laced fantasy comedy-thriller as an on-the-rocks couple is caught in a time-loop at a country getaway.
