\nYami Gautam-starrer \u201cArticle 370\u201d won best feature film at India\u2019s 72nd National Film Awards, announced Saturday in New Delhi by the country\u2019s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.<\/p>\n

\n\tGautam also took best actress for her role in the film, a political drama centered on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The best actor prize was shared between Kartik Aaryan, honored for \u201cChandu Champion,\u201d and Malayalam cinema star Mammootty, recognized for his performance in \u201cBramayugam.\u201d Rajkumar Periasamy won best director for \u201cAmaran.\u201d Best supporting actress was shared between Sachana Namidass for \u201cMaharaja\u201d and Rapshree Varkady for \u201cMithya.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRajkummar Rao-starrer \u201cSrikanth,\u201d directed by Tushar Hiranandani, won best Hindi-language film. Sanjay Mishra took best supporting actor for \u201cBhakshak.\u201d Telugu-language blockbuster \u201cKalki 2898 AD\u201d was named best popular film providing wholesome entertainment.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe awards, which honor films certified by India\u2019s Central Board of Film Certification during 2024, were decided by an 11-member jury chaired by Malayalam cinema filmmaker Jayaraj, who previously served on the National Film Awards panel in 2012. The jury viewed close to 400 feature films across 34 languages, including scheduled and non-scheduled tongues.<\/p>\n

\n\tTechnical honors were spread across several major 2024 releases. Tamil-language hit \u201cAmaran\u201d also picked up best editing and shared best music direction (feature film) with \u201cArticle 370,\u201d whose score was composed by Shashwat Sachdev; G.V. Prakash Kumar was recognized for \u201cAmaran.\u201d \u201cPushpa 2: The Rule\u201d won best costume design, while \u201cKalki 2898 AD\u201d also claimed best production design. \u201cBhool Bhulaiyaa 3\u201d took best sound design, and \u201cLucky Baskhar\u201d won best screenplay. Randeep Hooda was honored for best debut film director for \u201cSwatantrya Veer Savarkar.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the non-feature categories, \u201cRam-Naami\u201d won best documentary, and \u201cMain Nida\u201d took best arts\/culture film. \u201cPiplantri \u2013 A Tale of Eco Feminism\u201d won for promoting social and environmental values, while \u201cTouched as Water,\u201d directed by Joshy Benedict for JB Productions, won best animation film. Filmmaker Anand L. Rai won best direction in the non-feature category for \u201cStatue of Unity \u2013 Ekta Ka Prateek,\u201d and the Marathi-language film \u201cHumsafar\u201d won best short film.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditional non-feature honors went to \u201cNDA\u201d (best editing), \u201cBlue\u201d (best sound design), \u201cLife in Loom\u201d (best cinematography) and \u201cParat 41\u00b0chya Magavar\u201d (best music direction). Faraz Ali won best script for the Hindi-Kashmiri short \u201cObur,\u201d and Soundarya Jayachandran was honored for narration on \u201cLittle Planet: A Tale of Frogs.\u201d Sanjeev Srivastava won best film critic, and Kenchanuru Pradeep Kumar Shetty took the best book prize for his Kannada-language work on the philosophy and politics of Kannada cinema.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpecial mentions went to \u201cChola Dora aur Sui,\u201d directed by Jaymin Modi and Lokesh Ghai, and the Malayalam film \u201cBhadra-Kali Natakam,\u201d directed by Ananda Jyothi.<\/p>\n
