\nJoe Caldwell, a writer known for his work on the original \u201cDark Shadows\u201d TV series, died Monday following a stroke. He was 97.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe news was confirmed by Bob Issel, who frequently hosts \u201cDark Shadows\u201d fan events. \u201cJoe had just signed a handful of his memoirs for me three weeks ago back on June 20th. At that time he was convalescing at a rehab center after having a recent fall,\u201d Issel wrote in his Facebook post.<\/p>\n

\n\tCaldwell wrote on the ABC daytime serial \u201cDark Shadows\u201d for 63 episodes. Alongside Ron Sproat, he is credited with co-creating the signature vampire character, Barnabas Collins, who Johnny Depp played in director Tim Burton\u2019s 2012 film \u201cDark Shadows\u201d \u2014 and even earned a mention in the Apple TV hit \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditionally, Caldwell earned a credit for writing an episode of \u201cStrange Paradise\u201d and \u201cThe Secret Storm,\u201d both of which aired in the early \u201970s.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to Burton\u2019s adaptation, Warner Bros. Animation recently announced that it is reanimating the \u201960s cult show as an adult animated series. It is currently in development and will blend gothic, horror and supernatural genres.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2025, Caldwell published a memoir titled \u201cIn The Shadow of the Bridge,\u201d which detailed his experience growing up in Manhattan\u2019s gay bohemian community from the \u201950s to the \u201970s, as well as his complex relationship to religion.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to his TV writing credits, Caldwell was a published novelist who released titles like \u201cThe Pig Did It,\u201d \u201cThe Pig Comes to Dinner,\u201d \u201cThe Pig Goes to Hog Heaven\u201d and \u201cLazarus Rising.\u201d<\/p>\n
