\n\tHenry James\u2019 classic novel \u201cThe Portrait of a Lady\u201d is set to be adapted for Masterpiece on PBS and the BBC, starring Bill Nighy, Gemma Arterton and Nell Tiger Free.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d star Free will lead the six-episode limited series as James\u2019 New World ing\u00e9nue Isabel Archer, who leaves the States for Europe in search of adventure.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA charming young woman with an innate wildness and a burning desire to be independent, Isabel rejects a series of marriage proposals, but when she inherits an unexpected fortune that promises to grant her freedom, she falls prey to two American ex-pat schemers: the elegant Madame Merle and the charming but calculating Gilbert Osmond,\u201d the synopsis reads.<\/p>\n

\n\tArterton (\u201cSecret Service\u201d) will play Merle while Jim Sturgess (\u201cOne Day\u201d) plays Osmond. Bill Nighy (\u201cJoy\u201d) joins as Mr. Touchett alongside Miranda Richardson\u2019s (\u201cHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire\u201d) Mrs. Touchett, Archer\u2019s uncle and aunt.<\/p>\n

\n\tRounding out the cast are Jack Wolfe (\u201cShadow and Bone\u201d) as Ralph Touchett, Calypso Cragg (\u201cAn American in Austen\u201d) as Pansy Osmond, Maisie Richardson-Sellers (\u201cNine Perfect Strangers\u201d) as Henrietta Stackpole, Hugh Skinner (\u201cTwo Weeks in August\u201d) as Lord Warburton, Hamish Frew (\u201cDear England\u201d) as Casper Goodwood, Thomas Coombes (\u201cThe Agency\u201d) as Mr Bantling, Lydia Leonard (\u201cDown Cemetery Road\u201d) as Countess Gemini and Dean-Charles Chapman (\u201c1917\u201d) as Edward Rosier.<\/p>\n

\n\tAisling Walsh (\u201cMiss Austen\u201d) directs from a screenplay by \u201cShe Said\u201d scribe Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The series, which is already in production, will shoot across the U.K., Hungary and Croatia.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Portrait of a Lady\u201d is produced by Number 9 Films TV and Masterpiece, in association with FOX Entertainment Global.<\/p>\n

\n\tExec producers are Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen for Number 9 Films TV in partnership with Beta Film GmbH. Richard Tulk-Hart (High Road Entertainment) is co-exec producer while series producer is Rhonda Smith (\u201cTwo Weeks in August\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re excited to see Nell Tiger Free in the iconic role of Isabel Archer and Jim Sturgess in the equally iconic role of Gilbert Osmond,\u201d Woolley and Karlsen said in a statement. \u201cWe find it astonishing that James\u2019 prescient story has not been made for television for nearly 60 years, but like all great things, it will definitely be worth the wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series is set to debut on Masterpiece on PBS, the PBS app and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video in the U.S. and Canada. It will roll out on BBC One and iPlayer in the U.K. A release date hasn\u2019t yet been announced. <\/p>\n

\n\tFox Entertainment Global is handling worldwide distribution. Tulk-Hart and Fox Entertainment Global\u2019s Liz Tang brokered the deal.<\/p>\n
