\nBeta Cinema has come on board as the world sales agent for Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland\u2019s \u201cGrowth of the Soil,\u201d which will have its world premiere in the Special Presentation section of Toronto Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGrowth of the Soil\u201d is an epic love story set against the breathtaking yet unforgiving landscapes of Norway\u2019s mountains, based on Knut Hamsun\u2019s Nobel Prize-winning novel. The film stars Herbert Nordrum (\u201cThe Worst Person in the World\u201d) and Asta Kamma August, who was selected for the 2024 Shooting Stars program at Berlin Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe story unfolds in the remote Norwegian wilderness, where Isak seeks a place to settle. High above the tree line, he finds a barren yet promising stretch of land. As the harsh terrain tests his limits, he encounters Inger, a solitary woman marked by resilience and quiet secrecy. Together, they build a life from the ground up \u2014 cultivating the land and raising a family as the seasons turn. Yet as years pass and the world closes in, time, hardship and desire reshape them.<\/p>\n

\n\tMoland\u2019s breakout film \u201cZero Kelvin\u201d (1995), starring Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, won the Jury Prize in San Sebasti\u00e1n, and his collaboration with Skarsg\u00e5rd continued across several films, including \u201cAberdeen\u201d (2000), \u201cA Somewhat Gentle Man\u201d (2010), \u201cIn Order of Disappearance\u201d (2014) and \u201cOut Stealing Horses\u201d (2019). Moland\u2019s films have been nominated for the Golden Bear four times, twice winning awards. Moland also is a three-time Amanda Award recipient, receiving an Amanda Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.<\/p>\n

\n\tMoland co-wrote the screenplay to \u201cGrowth of the Soil\u201d with Gard B. Eidsvold, based on Hamsun\u2019s \u201cMarkens Gr\u00f8de\u201d (Growth of the Soil), which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. Hamsun\u2019s writing has been translated into more than 40 languages.<\/p>\n

\n\tCinematography is by Oskar Dahlsbakken (\u201cPossession,\u201d \u201cMunch, The Arctic Convoy\u201d), with an original score by Danish composer Kaspar Kaae (\u201cFjord,\u201d \u201cIn Order of Disappearance\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tAs well as \u201cThe Worst Person in the World\u201d (2021), Nordrum\u2019s credits include Ernst de Geer\u2019s \u201cThe Hypnosis\u201d (2023), and upcoming titles including \u201cSense and Sensibility.\u201d August\u2019s work includes \u201cThe Hypnosis,\u201d Isabella Ekl\u00f6f\u2019s San Sebastian premiere \u201cKalak\u201d (2023) and Lars von Trier\u2019s \u201cThe Kingdom Exodus\u201d (1994-2022).<\/p>\n

\n\tThey are joined by Eidsvold (\u201cTroll,\u201d \u201cQuisling,\u201d \u201cGrand Hotel\u201d), Anders Baasmo (\u201cKon-Tiki,\u201d \u201cWelcome to Norway\u201d), Oddgeir Thune (\u201cLoveable\u201d) and Sjur Vatne Brean (\u201cOut Stealing Horses,\u201d \u201cNr 24\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tTassilo Hallbauer, exec VP of Beta Cinema, described \u201cGrowth of the Soil\u201d as \u201ca powerful and visually stunning epic about love, resilience and survival.\u201d He added that Moland \u201cdelivers a deeply emotional cinematic experience that feels both intimate and universal. Set against the majestic landscapes of Norway, this story will resonate far beyond its setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGrowth of the Soil\u201d is produced by Hakon Overas of 4 \u00bd Fiction in co-production with Chris Sanger and Birgitte Skov of Scanbox Productions. It was shot on location in Norway between June and December 2025. Scanbox Entertainment will release the film in theaters across Scandinavia on Oct. 30.<\/p>\n
