No! It\u2019s literally two mice in a box.) The foursome are disgusted to find themselves watching \u201csome show called \u2018Big Mouse,\u2019\u201d in which a horny beast urges children to do unspeakable things. \u201cThey should arrest whoever made this,\u201d Josh sighs.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=465\">Thai Director Sompot Chidgasornpongse on \u20189 Temples to Heaven,\u2019 His Debut Feature at Cannes Directors\u2019 Fortnight<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe scene is not an unprovoked dig at a rival for the title of lewdest cartoon on streaming, but a winking acknowledgment of shared heritage. \u201cMating Season\u201d may not be an official spinoff of \u201cBig Mouth,\u201d like the short-lived \u201cHuman Resources,\u201d but it does share a creative team in Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin \u2014 the same quartet who landed on the visual metaphor of Hormone Monsters for the universal experience of puberty. The subject matter of \u201cMating Season\u201d isn\u2019t nearly as unique; rather than the precarious middle ground between childhood and adolescence, the show dramatizes the same phase of adult singledom as countless live action shows, like \u201cFriends\u201d or \u201cSex and the City.\u201d The raunch factor, however, is the same, and that\u2019ll be more than enough for fans missing \u201cBig Mouth\u201d after its conclusion last year. There\u2019s less insight into an under-explored life experience than in the earlier show, if about the same level of laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cMating Season\u201d is, funnily enough, the second \u201cBig Mouth\u201d-adjacent series about animals making their way in the world to premiere inside of a month. But where Amazon Prime Video\u2019s \u201cKevin\u201d (which was co-created by longtime \u201cBig Mouth\u201d writer Joe Wengert and works with the same animation studio, Titmouse) follows the namesake cat\u2019s adventures in New York City, \u201cMating Season\u201d takes place in an idyllic forest. Humans technically exist in this universe, but mostly as the background to jokes about <em>homo sapien<\/em>-themed roleplay or a horse love interest\u2019s background as a competitive jumper. Otherwise, there are no bipeds \u2014\u00a0let alone silly human concepts like \u201cjobs\u201d \u2014\u00a0to distract from the core focus of \u201cMating Season\u201d: these cuddly creatures\u2019 quest for love.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn the series premiere, Josh wakes up from hibernation to learn he\u2019s overslept and his wife has left him for another, bigger bear. This development forcibly ejects the mild-mannered mammal into both his parents\u2019 den and the wild \u2014 literally \u2014 world of dating, where smelling suitors\u2019 pee takes the place of an app profile. (The service is called \u201cTinklr.\u201d) \u201cMating Season\u201d is consistently creative in its combinations of romantic tropes with animal frameworks: Fawn\u2019s ex Dylan (Timothy Olyphant) is a wild wolf who refuses to be domesticated in an extreme instance of commitment issues; Ray turns to performance-enhancing pills when dating a rabbit who wants to hook up like\u2026well, you know. The cynical, hedonistic Ray experiences love for the first time with a goose voiced by Broadway star Annaleigh Ashford, who gets to show off her talents with a handful of musical numbers. Penelope is hung up on her Canadian ex Summer (Abbi Jacobson), a \u2014 what else? \u2014\u00a0hound who turns the classic Disney tale into a \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d-style romance. But even though a mock-David Attenborough voiceover solemnly intones that finding a mating partner is the most important quest in an animal\u2019s life, \u201cMating Season\u201d mostly takes pleasure in the chase. There\u2019s always another niche of (non)human sexuality to explore. Take gay men, who already use animal-based slang. Here, a skinny-but-hairy otter type takes the form of an actual otter, and when Fawn dates a moose who decides he doesn\u2019t swing her way, she happily volunteers to be his \u201cstag hag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe opening credits of \u201cMating Season\u201d play Elvin Bishop\u2019s \u201cFooled Around and Fell in Love\u201d \u2014\u00a0an answer to Charles Bradley\u2019s \u201cChanges,\u201d which served a similar role on \u201cBig Mouth\u201d \u2014\u00a0over real-life footage of animals copulating. The message is clear: the proverbial birds and bees got their name because <em>all <\/em>species feel compelled to reproduce and take part in the various rituals around that process. (On \u201cMating Season,\u201d birds take part in a \u201cbird mitzvah\u201d that provides an offhand gag, while bees produce the honey Josh uses to woo a date.) That means \u201cMating Season\u201d plays out on well-trodden territory, rather than shedding light on taboo topics \u00e1 la \u201cBig Mouth.\u201d It\u2019s also broadly relatable, and inventively illustrated. Growing up means losing some of the magic of childhood, and even a show about interspecies lovemaking can\u2019t retain the transgressive charge of 12-year-olds learning firsthand about masturbation and periods.
