\nFronti\u00e8res, the international genre co-production market, organized by Montreal\u2019s Fantasia International Film Festival, is partnering with the Tokyo International Film Festival Content Market (TIFFCOM) to stage a new genre gap-financing program at the Tokyo Gap Financing Market (TGFM) this October.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe announcement lands at the close of March\u00e9 du Film, where Japan was this year\u2019s country of honor, and caps a busy session for Fronti\u00e8res Platform, which in recent years has been a key player in whetting the growing appetite for genre film at both the Cannes\u2019 festival and market.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSince its inception in 1996, Fantasia has championed Asian cinema, and it feels like a natural evolution to expand our market into Japan,\u201d Fantasia deputy director Tania Morissette told\u00a0Variety<\/em>. \u201cWe are beyond proud of this new partnership and the opportunity to further shine a spotlight on international genre co-productions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tMorissette attended TGFM last year and was impressed by the quality of the projects. Reps from the two events began talking and finalized the partnership this past week at Cannes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTGFM alumni films screening this year at Cannes include Jorge Thielen Armand\u2019s \u201cDeath Has No Master\u201d (Directors\u2019 Fortnight), Sompot Chidgasornpongse\u2019s \u201c9 Temples to Heaven\u201d (Directors\u2019 Fortnight), and Konstantina Kotzamani\u2019s \u201cTitanic Ocean\u201d (Un Certain Regard).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn recent years, Fronti\u00e8res has seen an increase of submissions from Asia,\u201d Morissette said. \u201cProjects like the \u2018Funky Forest 2\u2019 \u00a0and \u2018Red Spider Lilies\u2019 were selected for the Montreal market last year, and Norihiro Niwatsukino\u2019s \u2018Magai-Gami\u2019 and \u2018Queen of Malacca\u2019 were presented at this year\u2019s sold-out\u00a0 Fronti\u00e8res\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0at Cannes.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe new Tokyo market program will feature international projects in advanced financing that are seeking a maximum of 40% gap financing. Teams will present their projects in a curated showcase at the TGFM, which supports feature film projects by facilitating one-to-one meetings with industry professionals (producers, financiers, distributors, broadcasters, and streaming platforms) as well as daily panels and conferences throughout the three-day TIFFCOM, held Oct. 28 to 30. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe market is affiliated with the Tokyo International Film Festival, which runs its 39th<\/sup>\u00a0edition Oct. 26 to Nov. 4. Submissions for eligible projects opened today (May 22) and close on July 21, 2026. Applicants can submit their project through the Fronti\u00e8res Market website, or through the TGFM platform.<\/p>\n

\n\tRecent Fronti\u00e8res hits take in \u201cLamb,\u201d from Valdimar J\u00f3hannson, a 2021 Un Certain Regard prize winner for originality, \u201cIn Flames,\u201d directed by Zarrar Khan and selected for Cannes Directors\u2019 Fortnight in 2023 and \u201cA Prayer for the Dying,\u201d Dara Van Dusen\u2019s 2026 Berlinale Perspectives player which drew admiring reviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother past Fronti\u00e8res title, the upcoming \u201cHot Spot,\u201d from Agnieszka Smoczynska, is set to premiere at Fantasia\u2019s 30th edition this summer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Fronti\u00e8res International Co-Production Market is funded by Telefilm Canada, SODEC, the Government of Quebec, the City of Montreal and RDV Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n
