\n\tThe team behind \u201cStar Trek: Strange New Worlds\u201d took the stage at 92NY in New York on Tuesday to delve into what fans can expect from Season 4 of the Paramount+ series. <\/p>\n

\n\tSeries stars Anson Mount (Capt. Pike), Celia Rose Gooding (Ensign Uhura), Melissa Navia (Lt. Ortegas), and Carol Kane (Cmmdr. Pelia) were joined by co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman in a conversation moderated by Variety<\/em>\u2018s Joe Otterson. The full conversation can be found below. <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter fans got a special sneak peak at the Season 4 premiere, Goldsman said that Season 4 features episodes that play across a number of genres (similar to how the show pulled off that musical episode in Season 2). <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a cadence between kind of classic \u2018TOS\u2019 sci-fi thriller and then the thing that actually makes us \u2018Strange New Worlds\u2019\u2026which is our worlds are genres,\u201d Goldsman said. \u201cThose are our strange new worlds. It\u2019s the lens that allows us to tell stories in a way that typically, or at least consistently, hasn\u2019t been done in \u2018Star Trek\u2019 before.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMount said that it was a remarkable experience to have Goldsman and fellow showrunner Henry Alonso Myers ask the cast what kinds of genres they\u2019ve always wanted to act in and then actually let them do it. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt got to the point where we went from \u2018What can they do?\u2019 to \u2018What can we give them they can\u2019t do?’\u201d Goldsman said. \u201cAnd it became a kind of extraordinary circus of the imagination, and everybody was game.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd while Goldsman said he did not want to spend too much time talking about the show\u2019s upcoming final season, he promised that it delivers a \u201cmore singular\u201d and thorough goodbye to the show for fans. <\/p>\n

\n\tBut speaking of genres, it has already been revealed that this season will feature an episode in which the crew of the Enterprise are transformed into puppets. Yes, puppets, made by none other than the iconic Jim Henson\u2019s Creature Shop. Gooding said getting to use the puppets was \u201csuch a gift as someone who grew up watching all of the puppets that came out of that studio.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo have our characters immortalized in that same way. It\u2019s wacky, silly, but also incredibly serious and heartwarming,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s so nostalgic but futuristic, which is what \u2018Strange New Worlds\u2019 has done from Season 1.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAll onstage also agreed that turning Pelia into a puppet was largely \u201credundant.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking of Kane, a living legend across TV and film, she had famously said upon joining the show that she had seen no \u201cStar Trek\u201d series or movies prior to joining \u201cStrange New Worlds.\u201d When asked if that has changed, she carefully said, \u201cI\u2019ve seen\u2026some, but not all. But enough to get a sense of the fact that I\u2019m extraordinarily lucky to be a part of this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople really care about the tales being told,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the tales being told all have hope at the base of them and it\u2019s so hard in our modern world to feel hope. So I\u2019m so grateful to be part of something that \u2014 it\u2019s not easy, it\u2019s not pretty, blah blah blah, but there is some hope and heart as the foundation. Because there\u2019s no future without that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMount and Gooding also touched on the fact that there characters are well-established in \u201cStar Trek\u201d lore, but yet they and the writers are still trying to break new ground so as to not simply retread what was done with them before. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s weird about the character is there\u2019s so little of him but he\u2019s so revered in canon,\u201d Mount said of Pike. \u201cBut it was great being able to come in and a weird challenge. I\u2019ve never had a character where we know the first act, we know the third act, but not the second act. And I got to come in and flesh that out and it\u2019s been a tremendous amount of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGooding again paid tribute to original \u201cStar Trek\u201d cast member Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura across three seasons of the original show and six movies. \u201cWe, as a loving audience, know who Uhura is going to become but she doesn\u2019t and we get to watch her find out. And we get to watch her have these canon experiences that establish her as the person she\u2019s going to become and my job was just to fill in the blanks.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThen taking questions from the audience, the cast were asked what quality of their characters they would like to see more of in the world. <\/p>\n

\n\tNavia said that she wishes to see more love of aviation and exploration, and that one of her joys working on the show is getting to meet real pilots or those who have become inspired to be pilots after watching. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve started to dive really deep into the history of aviation and we get to be in collaboration a lot with members of the space community,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten to work with NASA. I\u2019ve gotten to do some very cool things and when you look at the way aviation started, it was all about people who were taking risks. They were taking risks and collaborating\u2026We were actually talking about this the other day, our friend, an astronaut, Dr. Sian Proctor, she always says, \u2018When you solve for space, you solve for Earth.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGooding said she would like to see more \u201cjoyous curiosity.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tI think Uhura has a really beautiful way of embracing the unknown with joy and curiosity as opposed to fear and division,\u201d she said. \u201cI think we need a little more joyous curiosity in the world right now.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\u201cStar Trek: Strange New Worlds\u201d Season 4 premieres July 23 on Paramount+ with new episodes dropping weekly. <\/em><\/p>\n
