\nLuiz Carlos Barreto, one of the driving forces of the Cinema Novo movement in the 1960s and 1970s, died in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, July 22, at the age of 98.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn reaction \u2013 and it\u2019s a measure of the huge regard with which Barreto was held in his native Brazil and beyond \u2013 Brazilian President Lula In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva declared July 22 three days of national mourning in his honor, which means the national flag will be flown at half-mast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBarreto\u2019s health has been in frail condition since March 2024, when he suffered a fall. The official cause of death is pneumonia.<\/p>\n

\n\tBarreto is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Brazilian cinema, with a career spanning six decades. He was involved in more than 80 productions, and was closely associated with the avant-garde Cinema Novo movement, which rocked Cannes and beyond in the 196os and early 1970s, signalling a future for cinema, in the eyes of French Nouvelle Vague leading lights.<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn in 1928 in the Northeastern Cear\u00e1 State, Barreto moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1947 at the age of 19, and worked as a photographer for the important newsmagazine O Cruzeiro. At an interview in 1952, he met Lucy Vilella, then beauty queen of Miss Goias State and a notable pianist. The two got married two years later, and became lifetime partners, including in film production.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn further work as a photographer in 1961, Barreto visited in Bahia the set of \u201cBarravento\u201d the first feature of Glauber Rocha, who would become the leading figure of Cinema Novo. Rocha encouraged Barreto to make his debut as co-screenwriter and co-producer of Roberto Farias\u2019 \u201cAssalto ao Trem Pagador\u201d (1962). Next, he worked as the cinematographer on Nelson Pereira dos Santos\u2019 classic \u201cBarren Lives\u201d (Vidas Secas) (1963).<\/p>\n

\n\tBarreto founded in 1963 L.C. Barreto Produ\u00e7\u00f5es Cinematogr\u00e1ficas, the longest-running film production company in Brazil. Together with Lucy Barreto, they made over 80 features, which take in many of the great films of the Cinema Novo such as Joaquim Pedro de Andrade\u2019s \u201cGarrincha: Joy of the People\u201d (Garrincha, Alegria do Povo) (1963), Roberto Santos\u2019 \u201cThe Hour and Turn of Augusto Matraga\u201d (\u201cA Hora e a Vez de Augusto Matraga\u201d) (1965), Joaquim Pedro de Andrade\u2019s \u201cThe Priest and the Girl\u201d (\u201cO Padre e a Mo\u00e7a\u201d) (1966), Glauber Rocha\u2019s \u201cEntranced Earth\u201d (\u201cTerra em Transe\u201d) (1967) and \u201cAntonio das Mortes\u201d (\u201cO Drag\u00e3o da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro\u201d) (1969) and Nelson Pereira dos Santos\u2019 \u201cHow Tasty Was My Little Frenchman\u201d (\u201cComo Era Gostoso o Meu Franc\u00eas\u201d) (1971).<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Brazil\u2019s Cinema Novo disolved under military dictatorship, L.C. Barreto still managed to make films, such as Cac\u00e1 Diegues\u2019 main Cannes competition contender \u201cBye Bye Brazil\u201d (\u201cBye Bye Brasil\u201d) (1979) and Nelson Pereira dos Santos\u2019 \u201cMemoirs of Prison\u201d (Mem\u00f3rias do C\u00e1rcere) (1984).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe three children of Luiz Carlos and Lucy Barreto inherited the passion for cinema. Bruno Barreto is a renowned director, with features such as classic \u201cDona Flor and Her Two Husbands\u201d (Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos) (1976), one of the biggest box office hits in Brazil, and \u201cFour Days in September\u201d (\u201cO Que \u00c9 Isso, Companheiro?\u201d) (1997), nominated for a then Foreign Language Oscar. He also had a career in Hollywood. F\u00e1bio Barreto, who died in 2019, helmed \u201cO Quatrilho\u201d (1995), also a Foreign Language Oscar-nominee, and \u201cLula, the Son of Brazil\u201d (\u201cLula, o Filho do Brasil\u201d) (2009). Producer Paula now serves as CEO of L.C. Barreto, still a leading production company in Brazil.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe greatest legacy my father leaves me is the person he was. He used to say, \u2018My party is the party of Brazilian cinema.\u2019 He always opened channels of dialogue in support of Brazilian cinema,\u201d Paula Barreto told Variety<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added: \u201cWhen \u2018Dona Flor\u2019 was being butchered by the censors [during the dictatorship in Brazil], he got on a plane, spent a week in Brasilia, and convinced the [dictator Ernesto] Geisel\u2019s wife and daughter to watch the film and defend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a social media post, Lula highlighted Barreto\u2019s importance to Brazilian culture, announcing the official three-day mourning period in recognition of the filmmaker\u2019s contribution: \u201cBrazilian cinema owes a great deal to Luiz Carlos Barreto, who left us this Wednesday. His love for Brazil, his talent and, above all, his restless spirit made him the most important producer in Brazilian cinema over the last 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLuiz Carlos Barreto is survived by Lucy Barreto; his children, Paula and Bruno, and nine grandchildren: Julia, Mariana, Lucas and Jo\u00e3o, F\u00e1bio\u2019s children; Helena, Olympia and Gabriel, Bruno\u2019s children; and Camilla and Felipe, Paula\u2019s children. Most of his grandchildren have at some point worked at LC Barreto.\u00a0<\/p>\n
