\nHBO Max wants it all.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe most-nominated network enters Phase 2 of the Emmy race with the year\u2019s two most-nominated series, giving the platform a rare opportunity to capture television\u2019s top drama and comedy prizes, and potentially make history across three major program categories.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Pitt,\u201d the sophomore season of the breakout medical drama, leads all programs with 25 nominations. Close behind is \u201cHacks,\u201d which earned 24 nominations, making it the most-nominated comedy series in Emmy history. The next closest is Apple TV\u2019s horror-comedy \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay,\u201d with 19.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s an uncommon achievement for a single network or platform to produce both the most-nominated drama and comedy series in the same year.<\/p>\n

\n\tApple TV accomplished the feat last year with \u201cSeverance\u201d and \u201cThe Studio,\u201d the latter of which became another comedy record-breaker. A year earlier, FX earned the distinction with \u201cSh\u014dgun\u201d and \u201cThe Bear,\u201d which at the time also became the most-nominated comedy series in Emmy history before ultimately losing the top comedy prize to Season 3 of \u201cHacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd now, it is HBO Max\u2019s turn.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe platform\u2019s current dominance marks its first time leading both genres since 2017. (I misstated this distinction on this week\u2019s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast.)<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tFor HBO, however, this territory is familiar. The premium network led both drama and comedy nominations in consecutive years, in 2003 and 2004, with \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d \u201cSix Feet Under\u201d and \u201cSex and the City.\u201d It repeated the feat during the latter half of the 2010s with \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d \u201cWestworld\u201d and \u201cVeep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFew programmers in Emmy history have consistently produced the leading drama and comedy contenders in the same ceremony. History, however, shows that nomination dominance does not always translate into Emmy glory.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the 18 instances in which a single network led the Emmy nominations in both drama and comedy, the series ultimately won only four times (22%). <\/p>\n

\n\tThose successful double victories came twice for NBC with \u201cHill Street Blues\u201d and \u201cCheers\u201d in 1983 and 1984, again for NBC in 1987 with \u201cL.A. Law\u201d and \u201cThe Golden Girls,\u201d and, finally, for HBO in 2016 with \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d and \u201cVeep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLeading both genres reflects passion for programs for sure, but hardly guarantees a path to the big stage. Campaign strategy, momentum and voter sentiment during final-round voting will ultimately determine whether HBO Max can capitalize on its historic position and not fall to some of its closest competitors like Apple\u2019s \u201cPluribus\u201d in drama series and \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d in comedy.<\/p>\n

\n\tNotably, one statistic strongly favors another win for \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe most-nominated program series of the Emmy year has won its corresponding top series category 41 times across 73 eligible ceremonies (56%).<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year provided a rare exception when \u201cSeverance,\u201d with 27 nominations, lost drama series to \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d Before that upset, the most-nominated series had won its corresponding top category every year from 2015 through 2024.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Pitt\u201d enters this part of the season not only with the largest nomination haul but also as the reigning champion after winning its debut season. Only four shows have won drama series for both their first and second seasons: \u201cHill Street Blues,\u201d \u201cPicket Fences,\u201d \u201cThe West Wing\u201d and \u201cMad Men.\u201d Three of those four \u2014 except \u201cPicket\u201d \u2014 ultimately won at least four drama series Emmys overall.<\/p>\n

\n(CBS\u2019 \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d and \u201cThe Defenders\u201d also won the top drama prize in their first two seasons when the category carried different titles: \u201cOutstanding Dramatic Series\u201d and \u201cOutstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Drama,\u201d respectively.)<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tThe stats suggest \u201cHacks\u201d faces a slightly steeper climb.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the series leads the comedy field in nominations and already owns the comedy series trophy for its third season, the most-nominated comedy has historically converted at a lower rate than its drama counterpart.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe most-nominated comedy series has won 25 out of 59 times in the current category format (or 42%). The frontrunner has been especially vulnerable in recent years, losing five of the past eight ceremonies, including 2023, when \u201cThe Bear\u201d fell to \u201cHacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso worth noting: the last comedy series to win in non-consecutive years was \u201cEverybody Loves Raymond,\u201d which won for its seventh season in 2003 and again for its ninth and final season in 2005, with \u201cArrested Development\u201d winning in between. Other comedies to accomplish the feat include \u201cMurphy Brown,\u201d \u201cCheers,\u201d \u201cAll in the Family\u201d and, in the category\u2019s earliest years, \u201cThe Jack Benny Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo, if HBO Max completes the coveted drama-comedy double, \u201cThe Pitt\u201d appears to be the safer bet for a repeat victory, while \u201cHacks\u201d will need to overcome some more historical statistics.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe streamer also has its sights set on an even rarer accomplishment.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn limited series, HBO Max\u2019s \u201cDTF St. Louis\u201d earned 13 nominations, including directing, writing and supporting acting recognition for David Harbour, Jason Bateman, Richard Jenkins, Linda Cardellini and Joy Sunday. The network hopes to overtake Netflix\u2019s \u201cBeef,\u201d which leads the limited series field with 16 nominations. The first iteration won this category.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBeef\u201d stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan appear well-positioned in the lead acting categories, while Harbour and Cardellini face a more crowded supporting field because of their co-stars nominated from the same series. Meanwhile, Charles Melton and Yuh-jung Youn enter their respective races without internal competition. That could be helpful down the road.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut here are some more numbers to consider. The limited series frontrunner has been the least reliable of the three major program categories. The most-nominated limited series has won 16 of 45 times (or 36%) \u2014 compared with 45% for drama and 42% for comedy.<\/p>\n

\n\tSince 2021, the nomination leader for miniseries has lost four out of five times: \u201cWandaVision\u201d (2021), \u201cDahmer \u2013 Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story\u201d (2023), \u201cTrue Detective: Night Country\u201d (2024) and \u201cThe Penguin\u201d (2025), which led with 23 nominations but lost to \u201cAdolescence.\u201d Only \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d (2022) managed a victory.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe category has long produced \u201cfrontrunner\u201d collapses, including HBO\u2019s \u201cMildred Pierce\u201d (20 nominations, 2011), which lost to \u201cDownton Abbey,\u201d and CBS\u2019 \u201cLonesome Dove\u201d (15 nominations, 1989), which fell to \u201cWar and Remembrance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWinning the top series prizes in drama, comedy and limited series in the same year remains one of the rarest accomplishments in Emmy history. It has happened only three times: HBO achieved the feat in 2015 with \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d \u201cVeep\u201d and \u201cOlive Kitteridge,\u201d while NBC accomplished it twice, in 1996 with \u201cER,\u201d \u201cFrasier\u201d and \u201cGulliver\u2019s Travels,\u201d and in 1987 with \u201cL.A. Law,\u201d \u201cThe Golden Girls\u201d and \u201cA Year in the Life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo in fairness, HBO has done it before. But can they do it again? That remains to be determined. But it is still early in Phase 2, and plenty can change before ballots are finalized.<\/p>\n

\n\tFinal-round voting runs Aug. 17-26 ahead of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Governors Gala on Sept. 5-6. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sept. 14 on NBC.<\/p>\n
