{"id":4961,"date":"2026-07-27T04:11:51","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T04:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=4961"},"modified":"2026-07-27T04:11:51","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T04:11:51","slug":"john-oliver-returns-to-expose-trump-familys-shady-crypto-dealings-we-badly-need-proper-guardrails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=4961","title":{"rendered":"John Oliver Returns to Expose Trump Family\u2019s Shady Crypto Dealings: \u2018We Badly Need Proper Guardrails\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tOn Sunday night, John Oliver returned to the desk of \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d from his summer hiatus, and there was, naturally, <em>plenty <\/em>to discuss.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=4959\">Kevin Feige Says Ryan Coogler Met With David Jonsson Six Months Ago in a \u2018Secret Meeting\u2019 to Discuss \u2018Black Panther 3\u2019 Role: \u2018I Got Chills\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe HBO host, whose contract is up at the end of 2026 \u2014 and whose parent company is facing a probable acquisition by Paramount Skydance, putting the lefty comedian directly in the crosshairs of a pro-Trump owner who\u2019s already implemented a number of administration-friendly changes to CBS News \u2014 focused nearly the entirety of the show on President Trump, who\u2019d previously called crypto \u201ca disaster waiting to happen\u201d that \u201cmay be fake\u201d on Fox Business, but now refers to himself as \u201cthe first crypto president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cTrump realized just how much money he personally could end up making from dealing with a speculative asset because it\u2019s turned out to be a lot,\u201d offered Oliver. \u201cHis recent financial filings show that in just his first year back in office, his personal income surged to more than $2.2 billion, most of which came from his family\u2019s crypto businesses, which brought in about $1.4 billion. In fact, crypto has become the family\u2019s dominant business interest, overshadowing their real estate empire and every other business they have ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs Virginia Canter, a prominent ethics attorney, stated, \u201cThis is like a perfect vehicle to funnel money to [Trump] and his family to enrich them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOliver then broke down two of the Trump family\u2019s main crypto ventures: his meme coins (or jokes converted into crypto that purely have novelty value) and World Liberty Financial.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cMost meme coins, seemingly by design, basically follow the trajectory of pump-and-dump schemes. They spike in value when they first come out and then immediately crash with insiders selling at the peak,\u201d explained Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYou see, Trump and Melania launched meme coins just prior to his second inauguration, which skyrocketed in value and then plummeted. By the following December, Trump\u2019s meme coin was down 92% in value while Melania\u2019s was down 99%, but Trump walked away with $636 million. Trump even went as far as hosting an intimate private dinner for the 220 top holders of the Trump meme coin, thus offering \u201caccess to the White House in exchange for an investment in one of [Trump\u2019s] crypto ventures,\u201d reported The New York Times. Meanwhile, nearly 1 million people lost money in the Trump meme coin with their losses totaling $3.8 billion, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=4958\">Box Office: \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 Soars to $639 Million Globally After Two Weekends, Including $140 Million in Imax<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBut Trump\u2019s meme coin is just the tip of the iceberg here,\u201d said Oliver, before segueing to the Trump family\u2019s biggest crypto venture, World Liberty Financial.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOne way you can buy into World Liberty Financial is by purchasing a governance token, $WLFI, which merely allows you to vote on how the token is run, with 75% of purchases flowing to the company as a fee. And a number of sketchy deals have ensued involving World Liberty Financial. For one, Justin Sun invested $45 million in World Liberty Financial and then the SEC settled a fraud case being brought against him for $10 million with no wrongdoing admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf that weren\u2019t enough, an Emirati investment fund pledged to invest $2 billion in World Liberty Financial. At minimum, Trump\u2019s company netted $187 million from the deal.
