\nSan Sebastian Film Festival competition title \u201cIn My Father\u2019s Room\u201d has been added to Bitters End\u2018s fall sales slate. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe film marks the feature directorial debut of best-selling novelist Maha Harada.<\/p>\n

\n\tKnown in Japan under the title \u201cMuyou no Hito,\u201d the drama is adapted from Harada\u2019s own short story \u201cAn Unnecessary Man.\u201d The cast includes Aoi Yu (\u201cWife of a Spy\u201d), Ogata Issey (\u201cOnoda,\u201d \u201cSilence,\u201d \u201cYi Yi\u201d), Nagayama Eita (\u201cMonster\u201d) and Watanabe Eri (\u201cShall We Dance?\u201d). Kitagawa Yoshio, whose credits include \u201cEvil Doesn\u2019t Exist\u201d and \u201cLost Land,\u201d serves as cinematographer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe story follows Satomi, an employee at an art museum, after an envelope arrives bearing an unfamiliar key. It unlocks a room left behind by her father, dead a month earlier and alone at the time. Tracing what he did in his last days, Satomi uncovers a figure society had largely written off, one who nonetheless took quiet comfort in language, in tea ceremony and in small, overlooked beauty, and she comes to recognize the grace in how he lived.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe project marks a screen debut for Harada, one of Japan\u2019s most widely read authors, with more than 10 million copies of her books sold since she began publishing in 2006. Harada trained in Japanese literature and art history, then spent time at a trading firm and at museums, among them New York\u2019s Museum of Modern Art, before shifting into freelance curatorial and cultural writing work. Her art-themed novels include \u201cCanvas of Paradise\u201d and \u201cGuernica Cover-Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBitters End will handle both the film\u2019s international sales and its local release, which is scheduled for January 2027 in Japan.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe distributor has spent more than 30 years bringing international auteur cinema to Japanese audiences, including work by Hamaguchi Ryusuke, Bong Joon Ho, the Dardenne brothers, Jia Zhangke, Roy Anderson and Gianfranco Rosi. Recent releases handled by the company include \u201cBelow the Clouds,\u201d \u201cYoung Mothers,\u201d \u201cSex\/Love\/Dreams,\u201d \u201cAnora\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d On the production front, its credits as a producer include the Oscar-winning \u201cDrive My Car,\u201d \u201cTwo Seasons, Two Strangers,\u201d which took the Golden Leopard at Locarno, Cannes prizewinner \u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d and \u201cAll the Lovers in the Night,\u201d an Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes. <\/p>\n
