{"id":5056,"date":"2026-07-28T14:07:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T14:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2026-07-28T14:07:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T14:07:16","slug":"can-anyone-other-than-christopher-nolan-shoot-a-film-entirely-on-imax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=5056","title":{"rendered":"Can Anyone Other Than Christopher Nolan Shoot a Film Entirely on Imax?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tBack in May 2025, Christopher Nolan revealed his next epic, \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d would be the first feature film shot entirely with Imax 70mm cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=5054\">Bangkok International Content Market Bows With Strong Debut, Logs Over $65 Million in Deals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d sails to nearly $650 million globally, including $140 million in Imax \u2014 and with the company\u2019s coveted 70mm screenings sold out for weeks \u2014 a source at Imax suggests the success could spark outsized interest among other filmmakers who might want to shoot entirely with Imax film cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut which directors other than Nolan have the skills and resources to pull off such a feat? After all, filming with Imax cameras isn\u2019t cheap. \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d cost $250 million to produce, marking the expensive film of Nolan\u2019s career to date. Raw film stock alone costs approximately $1.50 per foot, and with the production sailing through two million feet of film, that total alone equates to roughly $3 million.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen there\u2019s the reality that Imax film cameras are loud and cumbersome. Not to mention the developing and processing costs. One print of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d costs $50,000, with the source adding that \u201cit\u2019s up to the studio how many prints they actually want to create.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tDenis Villeneuve seems like a likely candidate after he revealed that much of (but not all!) of December\u2019s \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d was shot on Imax 70mm film. At the film\u2019s trailer event, the director said, \u201cA big part of it was shot in Imax film, which was the first time for me, but I kept the desert in digital because I like the brutality of the digital Imax.\u201d Filming with the \u201cepic\u201d Imax cameras was unique, he said. \u201cWhen you see the result on screen, it\u2019s quite unmatchable,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope I will have the chance to do it again.\u201d Villeneuve\u2019s next project is the newest James Bond movie, which could be the perfect large-scale canvas. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen there\u2019s Ryan Coogler, whose next film is Marvel\u2019s superhero adventure \u201cBlack Panther 3.\u201d Coogler, working with his longtime collaborator, cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, shot sequences of his prior blockbuster \u201cSinners\u201d using a combination of 15-perf Imax film (for a towering 1.43:1 ratio) and Ultra Panavision 70 (for an ultra-wide 2.76:1 ratio). We were deeply involved in \u2018Sinners\u2019 and very supportive of that film,\u201d says the Imax source. \u201cHe shot sequences on film. We hope that he would do it again without question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe source continues: \u201cWe cannot speak at all to whether they\u2019re interested in the challenge of taking it on fully. But we have enough cameras and we have enough blimps that if those guys wanted to do it, we would figure out a way to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith the success of \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d and audiences filling seeking out Imax screens, there\u2019s no question the format will continue to draw interest \u2014 whether it\u2019s shooting on film or in digital. Michael B. Jordan\u2019s \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair\u201d remake was shot <em>for<\/em> Imax, which means it is optimized in post production \u2013as were upcoming releases like \u201cThe End of Oak Street,\u201d \u201cResident Evil\u201d and \u201cDigger\u201d (filmed in VistaVision and shown in Imax). Meanwhile this spring\u2019s \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d was shot using Imax-certified digital cameras, with the company then creating film prints.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSo, it is <em>possible<\/em> for Villeneuve or Coogler, or any ambitious filmmaker, to shoot their next film entirely on Imax film cameras. But few directors could justify the enormous costs that come with using the company\u2019s equipment. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAs long as we\u2019re able to handle it from like a scheduling perspective in terms of the cameras, and as long we have enough time to work on each production to create the film prints, we\u2019re willing to do as much as people want to do,\u201d says the Imax source. \u201cIf people want to create for our format, we do everything within our power to enable them to do that.
