\n\tBarcelona-based world sales company MoreThan Films has acquired period road movie \u201cLes Indes\u201d (\u201cThe Indies\u201d), co-written and directed by first-time feature filmmakers Pauline Julier and Nicolas Chapoulier, ahead of its premiere in the\u00a0Venice Film Festival\u2019s Giornate Degli Autori (Venice Days).<\/p>\n

\n\tProduced by Spain\u2019s Lastor Media (\u201cAlcarr\u00e0s\u201d) and Switzerland\u2019s Alina Film (\u201cThe Currents\u201d) and inspired by true events, \u201cLes Indes\u201d centers on Alejandro (Th\u00e9o Urtubey), a young Spanish nobleman, who, along with two French soldiers (played by Rapha\u00ebl Thi\u00e9ry and Lazare Minoungou), is tasked with delivering a portrait of the infanta of Spain \u2013 Maria Theresa, daughter of King Philip IV \u2013 to the young king of France, Louis XIV, in the hope of sealing a fragile alliance between the two countries in 1652.<\/p>\n

\n\tSet against a backdrop of turbulent transition as the Middle Ages moves into modernity, the film follows the three men on their long and arduous journey, across a Europe ravaged by wars and uprisings, to Versailles. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is the 17th century: the medieval era is fading in the face of the rise of science, rationalism, and commerce,\u201d Julier and Chapoulier explained in a statement. \u201cThe world is no longer merely to be explored \u2013 it is to be conquered. Galileo opens new horizons, while mercantilism lays the foundations of capitalism. In this context, popular uprisings erupt under the pressure of taxation and poverty. It is along these roads, marked by tensions between the old world and the new order, that \u2018Les Indes\u2019 unfolds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, which was presented as a work in progress at this year\u2019s ECAM Forum co-production market in Madrid, was recently picked up by Switzerland\u2019s Sister Distribution.<\/p>\n
