\nMary Beth Barone knows her debut Netflix special, \u201cGalaxy Brain,\u201d might piss some people off. In fact, she\u2019s keeping a list \u2014 on it are J.K. Rowling, Mark Zuckerberg and male comedians in general, to name a few.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m just fully ready to get it out there and see who\u2019s mad at me,\u201d Barone tells Variety<\/em> over Zoom with a sly smile. For the comedian and actor \u2014 who got her start in the New York City club scene before breaking through with comedy podcasts \u201cObsessed\u201d and \u201cRide\u201d alongside collaborator and bestie Benito Skinner \u2014 this moment has been a long time coming. <\/p>\n

\n\tOver the past two years, Barone had been workshopping material for a potential special while touring, and decided last summer to start putting feelers out to buyers. Then, things happened fast \u2014 a few weeks after an L.A. gig in August, Netflix called.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t feel excitement very much, but that was a moment where I was like, \u2018Holy shit, this is actually happening,’\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s such a career milestone for any comedian and I just felt like, \u2018Woah<\/em>, they said yes.’\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tBut that doesn\u2019t mean that Netflix is safe from being the butt of Barone\u2019s jokes. In the first 10 minutes of \u201cGalaxy Brain\u201d \u2014 filmed at New York City\u2019s Skirball Center in March \u2014 she razzes the streamer for the rarity of women-led specials and riffs on their advice for winning over viewers. It sets the tone that Barone is willing to go there<\/em>, and over the next hour, no topic is off limits as she tackles bad behavior from the men in her field, Ozempic, sex, politics and more.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m sure some of [the jokes] will be a little bit shocking, but I think women and queer people get shit on enough,\u201d Barone says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s time to shit on people back.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tBelow, Barone tells Variety <\/em>more about \u201cGalaxy Brain\u201d (out now on Netflix), making jokes she wouldn\u2019t be able to say online and what\u2019s in store for Season 2 of \u201cOvercompensating,\u201d the Prime Video comedy series she co-writes and stars in with Skinner.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWhat was your process for workshopping material for the special, and how much did it change?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tWhen I first started doing the hour, I would say it was probably 90% different material. Obviously, our lives are constantly changing and I always want the set to feel current but also sort of evergreen. So if there\u2019s any topical references, just making sure that will be relevant whenever it comes out and as long as the special is available \u2014 I guess until we all drown from global warning when the sea levels rise. It\u2019s a tough process because sometimes there\u2019s jokes that you love that just weren\u2019t playing as well. But I wanted to balance anything topical with things that happened a really long time ago, so the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, for example, or Jack the Ripper, things like that that are sort of timeless in their own way. I think one of the only super topical references was \u201cWicked,\u201d and I thought about changing that out to be something that happened more recently \u2014 but then I just thought like, \u201cWicked\u201d is forever.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tYou don\u2019t hold back in \u201cGalaxy Brain.\u201d In the beginning of the special, you point out how rare it is for women to actually get Netflix specials and share advice they gave you for winning people over within three minutes. Why was it important for you to cheekily call that out?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThey were really great about\u2026 they didn\u2019t have me cut anything. They definitely gave me some best practices \u2014 that thing about getting people\u2019s attention in the first three minutes was an actual conversation that we had. And I\u2019m a good student, so of course I was going to try to do that. I used to have a joke in the beginning of the set that was poking fun at cities that aren\u2019t New York, L.A. or Chicago, and they said, \u201cYou have three minutes to catch people\u2019s attention, to win them over. You don\u2019t want to alienate them right away.\u201d So it was genuinely me on tour trying to figure out what to say in three minutes to make people want to keep watching, and working that into the set just felt really natural. <\/p>\n

\n\tI think there\u2019s a lot of edgy moments in the special. I want it to feel cheeky and also like, stand-up is such a specific performance piece that I can\u2019t imagine going on stage and just launching in and not acknowledging the moment \u2014 that we\u2019re all in a room together and I have a microphone and I\u2019m going to try to make you laugh now.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tDo you think the situation for women in comedy is improving at all?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThe internet, of course, has done really, really good things for comedy and then some not so good things for comedy. But what\u2019s great is it\u2019s made comedy more democratic, because people can start with live performance and post online and then they create their own audience; the right people find them. And I think that\u2019s translated into having more women and queer people who are stand-up comedians that can tour and support themselves financially. That\u2019s been really fun to watch since I started comedy, when it was dominated by the club scene and if you couldn\u2019t get in there and work your way up and be one of the boys, there was less opportunity. Now with all these indie venues \u2014 especially in New York and in so many other cities like Pittsburgh, Denver, Chicago \u2014 it\u2019s been wonderful to be surrounded by more and more women and the LGBTQ+ community, because those are the people that I want to make laugh and those are the people that I want to be friends with.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tYou also don\u2019t shy away from calling out male comedians.\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThey\u2019re some of the worst people that we have!<\/p>\n

\n\t\tYou mention specific people, including Chris D\u2019Elia, and later jokes mention J.K. Rowling, Woody Allen, Mark Zuckerberg and more. How did you decide who to call out specifically?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI wanted to strike a balance between cultural references and general experiences and moving through the world with my unique point of view, but there were just certain names that I felt like belonged in the canon of this special. What I try to do is write the joke about that person that no one else would or could write. So I do hope that\u2019s where I landed with these ones, and I\u2019m sure some of them will be a little bit shocking, but I think women and queer people get shit on enough and it\u2019s time to shit on people back.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tThere are some jokes in the special that you say you wouldn\u2019t be able to post online, including one about Ozempic that riffs on Kim Kardashian\u2019s infamous \u201cget your fucking ass up and work\u201d quote \u2014 which she said to Variety<\/em>, by the way. What\u2019s the line for you when it comes to risky jokes and possibly offending people?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tHere\u2019s the thing about that \u2014 I understood what she meant and I think it started a conversation. And that, to me, is a successful interview.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith that joke specifically, part of what is so almost absurd about it is that it probably will<\/em> end up online with a comments section, and that\u2019s just part of putting out a special these days \u2026 But I think for me it\u2019s like, of course I\u2019m going to explore uncomfortable topics at times, but I don\u2019t find joy or feel a sense of accomplishment punching down. I always want to feel like my jokes are punching up. And sometimes you find just by doing the jokes that they\u2019re not always on the correct side of that line. But yeah, it\u2019s difficult. I want to make the right people uncomfortable, and I want to offend the correct people. Sometimes it is trial and error.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tSince the internet is forever, what\u2019s your advice for comedians coming up now when it comes to navigating social media?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI\u2019m sure there\u2019s an instinct if you\u2019re starting out to just post as many clips as possible and try to gain traction that way. But I would say that there\u2019s no substitute for experience and stage time, and the more real-world experience you can get playing off of an audience \u2014 you need that foundation because you can\u2019t really fake that.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd the comments section is always something you can look away from. I really struggle with that; I read comments. I\u2019m trying to stop, and I\u2019ve definitely created more boundaries for myself. There\u2019s more and more people that I meet in the industry who don\u2019t have internet access or they don\u2019t use social media at all, they pay someone to post for them. It\u2019s hard as a comedian, because I want my online presence to be an extension of me and feel very authentic, but I know people reach a limit where it\u2019s just not healthy. I can, even now where I\u2019m at, see how people completely lose themselves and their grip on reality \u2026 So I feel a lot of gratitude that things have happened really gradually for me. I\u2019m 35 now, so I have so many friends from before, I have an amazing family, I have a lot of support and people that I can surround myself with that are not in the industry to ground me.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tI do believe that the age you blow up at is the mental age you can be stuck at forever.\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThe other side of that too, which we see especially with comedians, is potentially a level of being out of touch where you have to fall back on just being offensive in order to feel like you\u2019re saying something. So my pledge to the public is that if I ever reach a point where I can\u2019t write about something that\u2019s relatable, I just won\u2019t do a stand-up special. I think when you have a totally frictionless life and you\u2019re flying in a private jet everywhere and everyone around you is just saying yes to your every whim, that\u2019s probably when you should just sit back and count your money and leave the public alone.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tYou\u2019re wearing a stunning dress in the special. Who designed it and what inspired the look?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tThat is a dress by Jackson Wiederhoeft. We met with their team last year \u2014 pretty much as soon as we knew we were going to make the special, I knew that I wanted them to design the dress. And so the references that we gave were the dress in \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d when she comes out of the water; so fabulous, so beautiful, burned in my brain as a kid. And then Megara from \u201cHercules\u201d also sort of came in as a reference. I knew I wanted it to be lilac, and it was actually such a specific color that they had to custom dye the fabric and just completely blew me away with what they were able to create. And then on the corset, we had beading done in the shape of the Gemini constellation \u2014 because I\u2019m a Gemini \u2014 so that felt like a fun tie-in to the sort of overall theme.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tI also want to ask about \u201cOvercompensating\u201d Season 2 because I know you just wrapped filming. What can you tease about Grace\u2019s arc this season?\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s sadder but also funnier. What was cool about arriving to Season 2 was that the characters already felt really lived in, so Benny\u2019s approach was like, what can we do that\u2019s surprising but also fan service? I do think the direction it goes is going to surprise a lot of people, but I can say I have a really wonderful love interest this season and I am excited to see it on screen.<\/p>\n
