\nMike Leigh, one of the independent movie world\u2019s most celebrated directors with a career spanning six decades and wins including multiple BAFTA and both a Palme d\u2019Or and Golden Lion, has said he\u2019s likely to be hanging up his filmmaking boots. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at a Golden Globes-hosted event in London, the 83-year-old said that \u201cTender Loving Care,\u201d his latest feature, would probably the last he directs. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAbsolutely. I think very likely, yes,\u201d he told Variety<\/em>\u2018s sister publication Indiewire when asked whether the film \u2014\u00a0recently added to the lineup at Toronto \u2014\u00a0would be his final feature. \u201cI mean, I know the girls don\u2019t like to hear me say that, but I think that is the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLeigh has spoken previously about his struggles with myositis, a disease where the immune system attacks the muscles and has severly impacted his mobility.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was lucky in making this last film \u2014 people were very helpful,\u201d he added at the roundtable. \u201cYou\u2019ll see when I get up that my two friends all helped me to stand up. So I probably can\u2019t do much more. And doing a play is even more physically demanding, strangely enough, than making a film, because on a film you can be moved around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTender Loving Care\u201d is a comedy drama starring Leigh\u2019s longtime collaborator and partner Marion Bailey alongside Paul Jesson (\u201cAll or Nothing\u201d), Kate O\u2019Flynn (\u201cHappy-Go-Lucky\u201d) and Alice Bailey Johnson (\u201cHard Truths\u201c) that has been wrapped in typical Leigh secrecy since it was first unveiled. Plot details are unknown aside from it being a \u201can insightful exploration of the contemporary world.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFrequent collaborators behind the camera include costume designer Jacqueline Durran, hair and make-up designer Nora Robertson, production designer Jane Brodie, composer Gary Yershon, editor Tania Reddin, director of photography Lucy Bristow and casting director Nina Gold.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs with his previous, critically acclaimed previous film \u201cHard Truths,\u201d\u00a0Bleecker Street and StudioCanal are distributing the film in the U.S. and U.K., respectively. <\/p>\n

\n\tWere \u201cTender Loving Care\u201d to be Leigh\u2019s last, it would bring to an end a glittering career of an iconoclast filmmaking and the director of beloved films such as \u201cNaked,\u201d \u201cHappy-Go-Lucky,\u201d \u201cAnother Year, \u201cLife Is Sweet,\u201d \u201cMr. Turner\u201d and \u201cSecrets & Lies.\u201d<\/p>\n
