\n\tThe team behind Prime Video\u2019s limited series \u201cBait\u201d \u2014 which follows a British-Pakistani actor as he auditions for the role of James Bond and faces backlash from the public and his family \u2014came together for a panel discussion at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles to offer audiences a look into the creation of the show.<\/p>\n

\n\tStar Riz Ahmed was joined by co-showrunner Ben Carlin, producer Allie Moore, director Bassam Tariq, and music supervisor Kira Elwis for a conversation moderated by film director Daniel Kwan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAhmed explained that the original concept for the show was not about James Bond, but the inspiration came to him after starring in \u201cRogue One\u201d and \u201cThe Night Of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAhmed said he experienced a disconnect between the way people perceived him and his everyday reality, saying while people imagined him \u201con a yacht with Han Solo,\u201d he was actually \u201cwalking around in flip-flops and cycle shorts\u201d and joked about getting \u201cbanned from Tescos for being a suspected shoplifter the same week \u2018Star Wars\u2019 comes out.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSaid Ahmed: \u201cSomebody told me that distance is the amount of shame that you carry. I thought, \u2018yeah, that\u2019s true. I need to get therapy or make a TV show about it.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tCarlin later brought the Bond angle in, telling Ahmed the show needed \u201cone focal point, vessel or symbol with which to tell this story\u2026 It\u2019s less about how the outside world is reacting\u2026 and more to what it\u2019s doing to him,\u201d Carlin said, explaining the show ultimately began reflecting internal struggles.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe team also spoke to experimenting with the show\u2019s tone, with Ahmed saying that because the protagonist undergoes an identity crisis, the show should also. Each episode adopted a different style, ranging from \u201ca Bollywood soap opera episode\u201d to \u201ca Linklater \u2018Before Sunrise\u2019 walk-and-talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMoore said the team\u2019s guiding principles were always \u201ccharacter and tone,\u201d while Tariq described the challenge of balancing absurdity and emotional realism. Referring to one dramatic Bollywood-esque sequence, he explained they wanted audiences to react with genuine emotional shock: \u201cYou want to make sure that it doesn\u2019t feel Bollywood, that you go, \u2018Fuck.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMusic also played a major role in shaping the show\u2019s identity. Elwis described diving deep into classic Pakistani and Bollywood soundtracks while also incorporating contemporary underground artists.<\/p>\n

\n\tAhmed also brought elements of his personal life into the show: \u201cBeing Muslim in the West feels like you\u2019re stuck in a spy thriller,\u201d he said. The show subsequently used Bond imagery and surveillance themes to reflect \u201cthe paranoia, the surveillance, the sense of being looked at but not really seen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe panel wrapped up with Ahmed talking about the audience\u2019s reaction to show\u2019s screening in Texas, with people saying they saw themselves represented on-screen: \u201cTo be able to recognize yourself in the stranger is the purpose of story.\u201d<\/p>\n
