\n\tIn 2007, Javier Bardem delivered one of the century\u2019s most chilling performances as Anton Chigurh in \u201cNo Country for Old Men.\u201d Nearly two decades later, he\u2019s proved once again he could convincingly play a sociopath, reimagining the vengeful murderer Max Cady on Apple TV+\u2019s hit summer series \u201cCape Fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cady was previously played by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and Robert De Niro in 1991, but the brilliance of Bardem\u2019s performance lies in the long stretches of perceived stillness, heightening the tension of the cat-and-mouse game he plays with the Bowden family, which star Lily Collias described as \u201ca lot of fun\u201d but \u201csometimes very jarring.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re playing cat and mouse, and then the cameras turn off, and I still feel like a mouse,\u201d Collias told Variety<\/em> at the \u201cCape Fear\u201d finale screening in New York. \u201cAnd he still feels like Tom from \u2018Tom and Jerry.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCollias plays Natalie Bowden, the daughter of Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom (Patrick Wilson), two lawyers who Bardem\u2019s Cady blames for his incarceration. After 10 episodes of buildup, the series finale depicts an epic battle in which Cady invades the Bowden\u2019s home, placing Anna and Tom on \u201ctrial\u201d for colluding against him and threatening their children.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[Episode] 10 felt almost like a play,\u201d Collias said. \u201cIt was just the family and him in the house, and we were doing the most insane things and laughing so hard off camera. It felt like such a joy that it was actually a beautiful time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore filming one violent sequence in which Cady grabs Natalie by the hair, Collias says Bardem politely apologized in advance and made sure she felt comfortable with the physicality.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe would go through such weird circumstances, it\u2019s little things that make me still giggle to this day,\u201d Collias said. \u201cIn Episode 10, there\u2019s one point where he has to grab me by my hair, and before the scene, he\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry, my love. Is it OK if I just \u2014 I\u2019m going to grab you like that?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, that\u2019s fine.\u2019 Then we start rolling and I see this thing coming up to me and I\u2019m like, \u2018What the fuck?! Well, OK, that\u2019s your job!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked about filming the intense finale scenes, Bardem smirked, explaining how he\u2019s learned to lean into the \u201cplay\u201d involved with acting as he\u2019s gotten older.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor me, it\u2019s more about a game,\u201d Bardem said. \u201cYou use your imagination to jump in and step out of it. I respect everybody\u2019s process, as long as those processes respect other people\u2019s processes. For me, the fun part is to really be part of a group of people that imagine things that don\u2019t exist, and they create it together based on the fact that it\u2019s all a big lie.\u201d<\/p>\n
