\n\tAt a studio in Manhattan\u2019s NoMad neighborhood, the speakers fill the room with an avant-pop track from 1979 \u2014 one that failed to find an audience upon its release, but leaped onto the Billboard Hot 100 this year after being discovered by teens on TikTok. Minutes ago, a group of stylists, publicists and journalists were bustling around with an all-business attitude; it\u2019s a Friday morning in late June, so we all want to get our work done to head into the weekend. But there was a marked vibe shift when a certain 19-year-old stepped out of the elevator.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat fit is so fire.\u201d \u201cWhat a fire setup.\u201d \u201cAre we about to hang out and do a video together? Fire,\u201d he says. Everyone is giggling about his vocabulary, but they\u2019re still charmed. Besides, he\u2019s in on the joke: The older the person he\u2019s speaking to, the more he plays up his youth. In 90 minutes with me \u2014 I\u2019m 26, too old to be his peer, but young enough to get his references \u2014 he uses the word \u201cfire\u201d a mere three times. But while chatting with the 30- and 40-something photographers and creative directors on set, something new is \u201cfire\u201d every 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

\n\tOutside of his entourage, most of the people here hadn\u2019t ever heard the name \u201cMalachi Barton\u201d before prepping for this shoot. That\u2019s OK \u2014 he\u2019s doing just fine with his target audience: the TikTok generation. He has more than 7 million followers on that platform, plus 3 million on Instagram. (He doesn\u2019t post on X anymore. None of the kids do.) And his popularity will only grow with the Aug. 13 debut of \u201cCamp Rock 3,\u201d in which Barton plays the male lead in the relaunch of the Disney Channel franchise that sent both Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers\u2019 careers into the stratosphere nearly two decades ago.<\/p>\n

\n\tSo he\u2019s got big shoes to fill, and he knows it. \u201c\u2018Camp Rock\u2019 is literally a legendary movie franchise, and you could ask anybody and they\u2019d know what it is,\u201d Barton says. \u201cThe fact that I\u2019m able to be a part of this next generation of Camp Rockers is so fun and so sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe child of Felicia Barton, a singer-songwriter who competed on \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d at its peak in 2009, and tour manager and audio engineer Loren Barton, Malachi made his on-screen debut in a Christmas episode of \u201cThe Young and the Restless\u201d in 2012. He was only 6 years old \u2014 and freaked out by the prospect of appearing on camera in pajamas. \u201cI was like, \u2018This is for me in my bedroom only.\u2019 I felt like I was naked,\u201d he says, laughing. But after shooting a few quick takes and seeing the production move on, Barton\u2019s nerves were replaced by a new feeling: \u201cI remember going up to my dad, like, \u2018Wait, I want to do it again. I want to keep going.\u2019 That was what started it, because I just didn\u2019t want to stop. The rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince then, he\u2019s been working almost constantly, flitting across Hollywood in small roles before being cast as the younger brother of Jenna Ortega\u2019s character in the Disney Channel sitcom \u201cStuck in the Middle\u201d in 2016. Now, he\u2019s become modern Disney royalty, a key player in the same pipeline that produced stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Zac Efron \u2014 or at least, the version of that pipeline that still exists in 2026.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCamp Rock\u201d became the second-most-watched Disney Channel film of all time when it premiered in 2008. Eighteen years later, Disney still manages to continue developing young performers into superstars; the recent rises of Ortega, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter prove that. Yet, today there are fewer crossover successes than there were during Disney\u2019s \u201cHannah Montana\u201d heights, since the sheer volume of content aimed at tweens has vastly increased and YouTube dominates traditional TV when it comes to kids. That means there\u2019s all the more pressure on the company to identify children with the je ne sais quoi to capture and maintain the eyes of a generation that\u2019s always chasing its next dopamine hit.<\/p>\n

\n\tNaturally, some of the pressure to become ubiquitous gets passed on to the young stars themselves. Barton is now a full-fledged influencer, living much of his life online to promote partnerships with brands like CeraVe and Hollister and \u2014 of course \u2014 his work at Disney.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have fallen into every pit there has ever been on social media,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery day, I scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll. My attention span is not good anymore.\u201d When a new project boosted his engagement on TikTok, \u201cI caught myself being like, \u2018These views are going crazy. I\u2019m on top of the world!\u2019 And then it just dropped, and my self-worth dropped: \u2018Oh my gosh, people don\u2019t like me as much.\u2019 Then I checked myself. Like, \u2018You sound stupid. What are you doing? It\u2019s not that deep.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not envious of anyone going through it now,\u201d says Joe Jonas, who returned to Disney to appear in and executive produce \u201cCamp Rock 3\u201d alongside his brothers. He sees his younger self in Barton. \u201cIt was tough enough with just the gossip sites commenting on teenagers\u2019 dating lives, but with social media, that\u2019s all heightened now. So I just reminded Malachi that it\u2019s important to remember where you come from, and the reason you started this in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBarton lives by that advice. \u201cHonestly, what drives me is Jesus Christ, and being a light of God in a business where there isn\u2019t a lot of that,\u201d he says. Then he shows his age again: \u201cThat\u2019s what gets me stoked when I wake up. I\u2019m like, \u2018That\u2019s so lit! Jesus is freaking sick<\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe knows that\u2019s not a line anyone expects to hear from a teen star in 2026. \u201cYou don\u2019t often see faith being talked about in this business. There\u2019s so many crazy things that go on,\u201d he says. \u201cI use God to say, \u2018I\u2019m not here for all that crazy stuff. I\u2019m here to do my job and have fun doing what I love through a filter of God.\u2019 It\u2019s just cuckoo craze out there.\u201d Reluctant to sound judgmental, he adds, \u201cBut, like, also, cuckoo craze is fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBeginning in the mid-aughts, \u201cHigh School Musical\u201d (2006) and \u201cCamp Rock\u201d (2008) ignited widespread interest in movie musicals for children. Disney\u2019s more recent musical franchises \u201cZombies\u201d and \u201cDescendants\u201d are why that trend has lasted \u2014 and the reason Barton\u2019s success keeps doubling. \u201cStuck in the Middle,\u201d a two-season sitcom called \u201cThe Villains of Valley View\u201d and the \u201cUnder Wraps\u201d movies established him as a familiar face across Disney projects. But his first musical, \u201cZombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires,\u201d is what earned him a large chunk of his online following. \u201cHonestly, dancing on TikTok was not my thing originally. But a couple of the guys in \u2018Zombies 4\u2019 were pretty big on TikTok, so they were teaching me,\u201d he says. \u201cI was like, \u2018Ooh, what? \u201cRenegade\u201d?\u2019\u201d The \u201cRenegade\u201d and other TikTok dances became a fixture of his internet presence as he promoted the movie and last summer\u2019s \u201cDescendants\/Zombies: Worlds Collide\u201d concert tour, often clearing 20 million views and no doubt helping the tour sell out more than 40 arenas. The tour will pick up again later this year with additional talent from \u201cCamp Rock 3,\u201d and Barton is also set to reprise his role in 2027\u2019s \u201cZombies 5: Secrets of the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTim Federle, best known for creating \u201cHigh School Musical: The Musical: The Series\u201d \u2014 in which Disney winked at its own influence on pop culture while introducing the world to a pre-\u201cDrivers License\u201d Rodrigo \u2014 proudly calls himself \u201ca big believer in Malachi Barton.\u201d The writer-director worked with Barton while executive producing \u201cCamp Rock 3,\u201d and also cast him as a warlock in his upcoming series \u201cCoven Academy.\u201d Resembling the soapy, addictive output of The CW in its heyday, \u201cCoven Academy\u201d is the first-ever young adult series to air on Disney Channel and Disney+, and has enough blood and grit potentially to bring back the teens who might otherwise be aging out of Disney\u2019s wholesome multi-cams.<\/p>\n

\n\tFederle made room for Barton in the cast after a conversation with Ayo Davis, the president of Disney Kids & Family, who called him after seeing fans lose their minds at the sight of Barton at an event. \u201cShe said, \u2018Tim, I haven\u2019t seen a reaction to a young actor like this ever in my career,\u2019\u201d he recalls \u2014 which is saying something, considering that Davis began working in talent development and casting at Disney in 2002. \u201c\u2018It\u2019s visceral in the room, and you should consider writing him a little role in \u201cCoven Academy.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I created this role, and Malachi read for it \u2014 which surprised me, because he\u2019s the kind of actor who\u2019s quickly tipping into offer-only,\u201d Federle says.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\n\tThis is true; with \u201cCamp Rock 3,\u201d Barton was the first choice to play Fletch, according to Disney. He\u2019s clearly still floored by his own growing profile. \u201cThe \u2018Camp Rock\u2019 process was crazy. It was literally so bang-bang-bang,\u201d Barton says. \u201cI was on tour. We were literally maybe halfway through, and I got the call from Disney. They were like, \u2018Hey, so we\u2019re doing another \u201cCamp Rock.\u201d This is the vibe.\u2019 I was like, \u2018OK, let me feel it out.\u2019 I read the script \u2014 so fire \u2014 but I was on tour.\u201d He was told that if he accepted the role, he would have to skip the rehearsal period due to his tour obligations and go straight into shooting \u2014 then immediately head into production on \u201cCoven Academy.\u201d Exhausted, Barton didn\u2019t know what to do. \u201cI felt like I wasn\u2019t in the right mental space to make decisions. Then I finally had a day off. A week later, I called \u2019em back, like, \u2018All right, screw it. Let\u2019s do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe X factor Malachi has is so undeniable.\u201d After being impressed with Barton\u2019s performance in the \u201cCoven Academy\u201d pilot, Federle began writing more material for him \u201cto help headline the series, because show business is about timing and luck and the universe whispering to you,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it was so clear that he has something incredibly special that you can\u2019t teach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Barton certainly carries the expected polish of a media-trained child actor \u2014 clear skin and a bright smile, perfect manners, a ceaselessly chipper attitude \u2014 there are moments when the normie 19-year-old boy in him comes through. When we first sit down, I ask what memories he has from the years before his career began. \u201cIt\u2019s so funny! It\u2019s really hard for me to remember a time where I wasn\u2019t working,\u201d he says. He\u2019s still grinning, but there\u2019s almost something sad in his words, or at least a wistfulness.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt has been a blessing and a curse. Because it\u2019s all I\u2019ve known, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m comfortable in it.\u2019 But oh, man,\u201d Barton says. \u201cThere\u2019s a part of me that wanted the normal, like, \u2018I\u2019m going to middle school. I\u2019m going to high school.\u2019\u201d When he tells me about making the decision to join \u201cCamp Rock 3\u201d right after being on tour, he reasons, \u201cMy friends are in college, so it\u2019s not like I\u2019d be going home and hanging out with them. Everyone\u2019s<\/em> in college, dude. It sucks.\u201d But on a dime, he shifts back to the positive. \u201cThey\u2019re home for summer right now, though, which is great,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd honestly, I\u2019m so grateful for my parents. They did such a great job at rushing me from set to baseball practice, and making sure I have friends outside of the business. And listen, I\u2019m not blocking myself off to college at some point. My dad just turned 45, and he\u2019s back in school to become a therapist. Like, the world is your oyster. Just freaking do whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat everyday boyishness is the reason Disney Kids & Family\u2019s senior vice president of casting, Brenda Kelly Grant, and her team gravitated to Barton for placement across the Disney portfolio. \u201cThis is a kid \u2014 now an adult \u2014 who has always been himself. He\u2019s always had a very specific point of view,\u201d she says. \u201cHe had real interests as a kid. They would wrap him on set by a certain time so he could go to camp. I think that\u2019s what really has connected with kids: They appreciate that relatability and that authentic journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGrant also points out that Barton has developed a reputation for skillfully taking direction. He says the best note he\u2019s been given came from director Paul Hoen on the set of \u201cZombies 4.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI blink so much when I act,\u201d Barton says. \u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018First of all, you need to open your eyes, and you need to keep them open. There\u2019s so much story that is told in your eyes.\u2019 And I forget what movie it\u2019s from, but he was like, \u2018It\u2019s all in the eyes, Chico.\u2019 Or something like that.\u201d Barton may be too young to recognize the \u201cScarface\u201d reference, but he\u2019s held on to its lesson: \u201cI really learned that on that movie, because watching it back, I was like, \u2018Oh, if I would just keep my eyes still, that would have been a lot better.\u2019 It\u2019s all in on your eyes more than you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFederle recalls that ahead of shooting \u201cCoven Academy,\u201d \u201cI said, \u2018Malachi, your audience is growing up. I think it\u2019d be great for you to start growing up with them. Ground it. Shake off anything multi-cam. Just be a guy. Step into your greatness by actually doing less. This is a single camera; it\u2019s on you, and the camera does a lot of the work. Just trust that you\u2019re enough.\u2019 And I give him credit. He really, I think, trusted me, did less and was amazing. My experience with him is that he really wants to be pushed, and he doesn\u2019t want to coast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Barton isn\u2019t quite ready to leave the nest yet. When I ask whether he\u2019s starting to get offers for adult projects, he says, \u201cSome indie projects have come through, and opportunities to produce, and I\u2019m loving that. But truthfully, I need a break. I need my brain to breathe for a second.\u201d He says \u201cCoven Academy\u201d is giving him what he needs in terms of a transition: \u201cI got to tap into a little bit of like a psychopath. I\u2019m crying, we\u2019re fighting, we\u2019re kissing \u2014 all the things of older television that I\u2019m really excited for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked how long he thinks he\u2019ll stay at Disney, Barton says, \u201cDude, as long as they\u2019ll have me! I\u2019ve literally grown up in the Disney bubble, and I wouldn\u2019t trade it for the world. I\u2019m trusting God\u2019s plan, and I\u2019m hanging out with Mickey Mouse right now, and it\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe stability of the Disney bubble helps keep Barton afloat. He had \u201ca pretty heavy walk with anxiety\u201d during the pandemic, he tells me, including panic attacks that were \u201cgnarly\u201d enough to make him quit baseball. \u201cI am just a kid. There\u2019s battles you go through at 19 that are just natural, and I\u2019m figuring it out. It\u2019s such a hard journey,\u201d he confesses before pivoting back to the bright side. \u201cThere\u2019s something really cool about it, though, because you learn so much from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI tell him that being his age was a nightmare for me, and the camaraderie over post-pubescent angst seems to allow him to exhale. He puts his elbows on the table. \u201cIt\u2019s, like, crazy. Like, why are we so crazy? What happens from 17 to 20?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s going to last a little past 20, I tell him. Especially for a Hollywood kid. Who knows what the rest of his early adulthood will look like?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSorry \u2014 25. 30. I\u2019m going to be ruined until I\u2019m 40,\u201d he says, beginning to laugh again. For the first time, he allows the smallest bit of sarcasm to creep in. \u201cBut no, it\u2019s great. I\u2019m just hanging out and having fun. We\u2019re doing the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
