Pedro Borges at Portugal\u2019s Midas Filmes, a past Kulunga partner, co-produces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShot with an observational style, priming social realism and emotional insight, \u201cChapo 100\u201d lifts off into a magical realist style which, along the lines of Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez\u2019s \u201cOne Hundred Years of Solitude,\u201d says much about the collective mindset and heart of Maputo dwellers and the illusions of individual characters, \u201ccelebrating the resilience, tenderness, and humanity found in the city\u2019s everyday rhythms,\u201d Langa and Sousa said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn it, Sito\u00e9, an 80-year-old flower vendor meets Valentina, a vegetable seller in her seventies. A simple flower sparks a quiet romance. When a thief steals Valentina\u2019s rented wig, Sit\u00f3e runs after him and is struck dead by a speeding chapa, a local minibus. His spirit becomes tied to the vehicle that killed him, however, and flowers begin to bloom within it.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201c\u2018Chapa 100\u2019 is my love letter to Maputo. I wanted to portray the city not simply through its streets, but through the people who give it its heartbeat. Together with the Atlas Workshop Development Prize, this marks an important step in the film\u2019s international journey, noted Luminalia\u2019s head of sales and festivals, Tommaso Priante.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn a drive into sub-Saharan African cinema, Luminalia is also representing \u201cThe Prophet\u201d and \u201cAtcha Atcha,\u201d the new doc by award winning Senegalese director Mamadou Dia.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDia\u2019s debut, \u201cNafi\u2019s Father,\u201d won the award for best first feature at the 2019 Locarno Film Festival as well as the Golden Leopard in its Filmmakers of the Present section.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tScreening out of competition at this year\u2019s Locarno Festival, \u201cAtcha, Atcha\u201d follows students in their third and final year at the\u00a0\u00c9cole\u00a0des Sables, founded by legendary Senegalese dancer and choreographer Germaine Acogny and described by Dia as \u201cthe Ivy League of dance schools in sub-Saharan Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDia and Harawe will deliver a masterclass at this year\u2019s Open Doors.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tScreening at Open Doors and a Mozambique-South Africa-Qatar, \u201cThe Prophet\u201d begins with evangelical Pastor H\u00e9lder preaching in the village of Manjacaze. His inspiration and congregation dwindling, he turns to black magic to fire up his oratory and heal his parishioners, but his powers come at ever larger sacrifice, literally.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPointedly framed, even in vertical box aspect, bringing sense and sensitivity to shots, \u201cThe Prophet\u201d builds as a black and white film parable about overweening ambition, becoming as well \u201can expression of the community [Manjacaze]\u00a0that inspired it,\u201d Luque told <em>Variety<\/em>. \u201cThe Prophet\u201d also marked out Luque as a director to track.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cDistributing African films, for us, means accepting a challenge that is not only operational but also theoretical and positional. Luminalia was founded precisely on this idea: to question our own ethnocentrism and bring a more conscious approach while working with non-Western titles,\u201d Priante told <em>Variety<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe added: \u201dWe\u2019re very happy to see that around 50% of this year\u2019s line-up consists of African titles.
