\n\tNot every up-and-coming artist can say they watched Michelle Obama jam out to their music before landing on the charts. But\u00a0two\u00a0weeks after Will Ferrell proudly played his son Magnus\u00a0Ferrell\u2019s single \u201cAsleep Talking\u201d on the former first lady\u2019s \u201cIMO\u201d podcast, the 22-year-old musician\u00a0scored his first\u00a0Billboard\u00a0hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI did know he was going to do that,\u00a0but I didn\u2019t know when it was dropping,\u201d Ferrell\u00a0says\u00a0of the viral moment.\u00a0\u201cWe happened to be visiting friends in Oregon, and I was in the middle of nowhere when it happened. I was\u00a0basically in\u00a0this forest,\u00a0kind of freaking\u00a0out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough his famous father tends to dominate the comments on his TikTok videos, Ferrell\u2019s musical lineage actually runs through his grandfather, Roy Lee Jr., a jazz musician who played saxophone and piano with the Righteous Brothers throughout the 1960s and \u201970s. Growing up in a house filled with jazz and blues, the younger Ferrell absorbed those influences early \u2014 sounds that still seep into the genre-blurring mix of soul, R&B and pop he makes today.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI actually hated it from the ages of about 5 to 12. I thought it sucked,\u201d Ferrell recalls of his early days learning jazz piano. \u201cBut I have this vivid memory of figuring out how to play a minor ninth chord when I was 13. I started improvising with it, and I was like, \u2018Oh, this is why I practice. This is why I do this\u00a0over and over again\u2014\u00a0because now I can hear things and\u00a0play things\u00a0that sound cool to me.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBelow, Ferrell talks about his breakout song \u201cAsleep Talking,\u201d his lesser-known family influences and dream collaborators:<\/p>\n

\nWhat was your reaction to seeing your dad show Michelle Obama your song?<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tWe\u2019d\u00a0had some prior viral moments with him, but this was the first time the focus was fully on the music. That was what made it so special. I finally felt ready for it to have a spotlight on it.\u00a0It was also fun because people see him as an actor, but they\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0really seen him as a dad. I have, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0happy the world gets to see that too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nTell me about the process of writing \u201cAsleep Talking\u201d and what inspired it.<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tIn December, I started listening to old soul and digging deep into legendary disco and soul music \u2014 anything \u201cSoul Train.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0talking\u00a0The Gap Band, Teddy Pendergrass,\u00a0Jamiroquai. I was like, \u201cI really, really, really, really like this.\u201d\u00a0 Then we made \u201cAsleep Talking,\u201d and it came at a time when I was under a lot of romantic and emotional distress.\u00a0So,\u00a0it was really easy to get that feeling of yearning into the song.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was pretty fast.\u00a0We wrote it in one session, changed one\u00a0verse\u00a0and then totally flipped the production. That was it.\u00a0I think there was just a really pure feeling in all facets of the song, and we were really excited about this new sound.\u00a0It just\u00a0kind of flowed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nTikTok is a big channel for promoting your music.\u00a0What\u2019s\u00a0your relationship with social media?<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tIf I could break my phone with a hammer forever, I would.\u00a0Literally, I\u2019d\u00a0throw it across the room. But in any era of music, there was always something you\u00a0probably didn\u2019t\u00a0want to do that you had to do. If I want this badly and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0truly my dream,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0willing to temporarily be a slave to the algorithm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nI saw one TikTok comment that compared you to a white, male Sade.<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\t[Laughs] It\u2019s\u00a0so flattering to be spoken about in the same conversation as legendary artists who have made such\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0on the industry.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0nowhere near that, but I intend to get to that level. It will take a lot more practice,\u00a0time\u00a0and reps.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0just flattered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nSometimes people in your position change their stage name to create distance from their parents. Was that ever a thought for you?<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI thought my Swedish first name paired weirdly with my very\u00a0Irish-American\u00a0last name. I was like, \u201cOK, this is\u00a0kind of unique. Nobody on the planet has the combination of the two.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn terms of the nepo baby thing,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0very grateful\u00a0to be in the position\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0in and able to chase this dream as a job. But I also acknowledge how much work\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0put into it. It takes a lot of time and effort. I really care, and\u00a0I think the music\u00a0speaks for itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nHow did your upbringing contribute to your love for this kind of music?<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tNot a lot of people know this, but my grandpa\u00a0[Roy Lee Ferrell]\u00a0is a really good keys player and played for the Righteous Brothers forever.\u00a0At every family function, we would play blues and jazz.\u00a0
I actually hated playing from about ages 5 to 12.\u00a0I thought it sucked. But my grandpa was always fun to play with because we were improvising and playing blues. <\/p>\n

\n\tHe let me play this organ he had, which I have now.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0from 1953.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the coolest thing ever and heavy as shit, but it has so much soul in it.\u00a0He made it fun without forcing it on\u00a0us,\u00a0and\u00a0invited\u00a0us to play when he sensed I was interested.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0just the best.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nWho is your dream collaborator?<\/strong>\u00a0\t<\/h5>\n

\n\tI love Billie Eilish\u2019s voice. I think\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0awesome.\u00a0Our voices would mesh really well, and I\u2019ve never heard her on a really, really\u00a0funky track.\u00a0It would be interesting to hear how our voices pair.\u00a0<\/p>\n
