\nOutstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Updated: Aug. 11, 2026):<\/strong> Two lone nominees who are their shows\u2019 only representation; two comedy legends still seeking their first acting Emmys; and one performer earning his third consecutive nomination. Could any of the official Emmy submissions make the difference?<\/p>\n

\n\tYahya Abdul-Mateen II, \u201cWonder Man\u201d (Disney+) | \u201cMatinee\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAn Emmy winner in 2020 for the limited series \u201cWatchmen,\u201d he\u2019s now the surprise of the category. With Disney+\u2019s shocking cancellation of the Marvel comedy, the nomination became the only opportunity to recognize a critically acclaimed show. He may be the least likely winner to some, but he\u2019s also the most interesting nominee. Those are not the same thing.<\/p>\n

\n\tSteve Carell, \u201cRooster\u201d (HBO Max) | \u201cAngry, Like an Angry Person\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith 11 nominations across two decades and still no acting Emmy, Carell remains one of television\u2019s great unresolved stories. His midseason submission from the HBO Max comedy suggests the network is putting its full weight behind him. The narrative writes itself. Whether enough voters notice is another matter.<\/p>\n

\n\tMatthew Rhys, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (Apple TV) | \u201cThe Inaugural Swim\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2018 drama actor winner for \u201cThe Americans\u201d jumps genres and lands on an Apple TV comedy with 19 nominations. \u201cThe Inaugural Swim\u201d is a straight-up physical showcase from an actor who has built his career on stillness. As a triple nominee, also recognized for producing and for lead actor in the limited series \u201cThe Beast in Me,\u201d Rhys could be the prom king of the season.<\/p>\n

\n\tJason Segel, \u201cShrinking\u201d (Apple TV) | \u201cThe Bodyguard of Sadness\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThree seasons, three nominations and no wins. Segel remains the emotional center of an Apple TV comedy that keeps growing in nominations without translating that support into victories. This is a strong submission in a category where it still may not be enough.<\/p>\n

\n\tMartin Short, \u201cOnly Murders in the Building\u201d (Hulu) | \u201cFlatbush\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe last man standing from the trio, with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez absent from the category, Short submits an episode that didn\u2019t make the Hulu comedy mystery\u2019s own submitted six, signaling just how much of a showcase it is for him. Decades of nominations and still no lead comedy actor win. At some point, the Television Academy runs out of chances to fix that.<\/p>\n

\n\tFinal Emmy voting runs from Aug. 17-26, leading into the Creative Arts Awards and Governors Gala on Sept. 5\u20136, culminating with the Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 14 on NBC.<\/p>\n
