\nCristian Mungiu claimed his second Palme d\u2019Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night, as \u201cFjord\u201d brought Neon its seventh consecutive top prize from the Croisette.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe win extends a run for the U.S. distributor that has reshaped the modern Cannes record books. Neon\u2019s previous six Palme d\u2019Ors \u2013 beginning with Bong Joon Ho\u2019s \u201cParasite\u201d in 2019 \u2013 also include Julia Ducournau\u2019s \u201cTitane,\u201d Ruben \u00d6stlund\u2019s \u201cTriangle of Sadness,\u201d Justine Triet\u2019s \u201cAnatomy of a Fall,\u201d Sean Baker\u2019s \u201cAnora\u201d and Jafar Panahi\u2019s \u201cIt Was Just an Accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFjord\u201d represents a notable departure for Mungiu, his first film shot in English and Norwegian rather than his native Romanian. The director\u2019s debut Palme came in 2007 for \u201c4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,\u201d which announced him as a defining voice of the Romanian New Wave. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMany a great world cinema auteur has come unstuck when venturing farther afield, but in Mungiu\u2019s case, the journey makes perfect sense: So much of his work has been preoccupied with globalization, migration and cultural divides between eastern and western Europe that \u2018Fjord\u2019 feels immediately of a piece with his searching, bristling oeuvre, despite its crisp new setting,\u201d wrote Guy Lodge, reviewing the film for Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s Cannes competition jury was chaired by South Korean director Park Chan-wook, with members including Chloe Zhao, Demi Moore and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd. Tilda Swinton presented the Palme d\u2019Or at the Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Lumi\u00e8re ceremony.<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the competition, Lukas Dhont\u2019s WWI drama \u201cCoward\u201d saw leads Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne share the best actor prize. Best actress honors were likewise split between Virginie Efira and Japan\u2019s Okamoto Tao, both leads in Hamaguchi Ryusuke\u2019s \u201cAll of a Sudden.\u201d Emmanuel Marre took best screenplay for \u201cA Man of His Time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tValeska Grisebach\u2019s \u201cThe Dreamed Adventure\u201d claimed the jury prize, while best director was shared between Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for \u201cThe Black Ball\u201d and Pawel Pawlikowski for \u201cFatherland.\u201d The Camera d\u2019Or for best first feature went to Marie Cl\u00e9mentine Dusabejambo for \u201cBen\u2019Imana,\u201d with Federico Luis winning the short film Palme d\u2019Or for \u201cFor the Opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe ceremony also saw Barbra Streisand receive an honorary Palme d\u2019Or. Unable to attend due to a knee injury, Streisand gave her acceptance via video, with Isabelle Huppert presenting the award.<\/p>\n
