\n\tFilmmaker Lilly Wachowski is working to get her next project, \u201cThe Hunted,\u201d out of late-stage production. But the \u201cBound\u201d and \u201cMatrix\u201d director says nobody in Hollywood wants to finance the thriller, which is budgeted at around $10 million, because of its trans representation.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople like it, but they really don\u2019t want to make it because it\u2019s [got a] wall-to-wall trans cast,\u201d Wachowski said on KCRW\u2019s \u201cThe Business\u201d podcast last Friday. \u201cI have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a script that was extremely important for me to write,\u201d she continued.\u00a0\u201cIt was a response to what is happening in the world for trans people, and it gave me a hugely cathartic receptacle to dump all of my anger and rage and frustration into.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWachowski co-wrote the project with her partner, Mickey Ray Mahoney. While facing difficulties getting \u201cThe Hunted\u201d off the ground, which is currently in development through Anarchists United and Natasha Lyonne\u2019s Ariadne banner, Wachowski assembled a live table read at Los Angeles\u2019 Dynasty Typewriter theater from Aug. 7-8.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m just going to go out and I\u2019m going to grab that trans joy with all of my friends,\u201d Wachowski said of her thought process. \u201cIt\u2019s not the thing that I had imagined it was going to be, but the end result is the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWachowski is known for her many sci-fi collaborations with her sister, Lana Wachowski. After directing 1999\u2019s \u201cThe Matrix,\u201d the two went on to helm sequels like \u201cThe Matrix Reloaded\u201d and \u201cThe Matrix Revolutions.\u201d The pair also directed the cult classic \u201cSpeed Racer,\u201d \u201cCloud Atlas\u201d and \u201cJupiter Ascending.\u201d<\/p>\n
