\nTramell Tillman is going to play a big role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe\u2019s future. And he can finally talk about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTillman, who won an Emmy last year for his supporting role in Apple TV\u2019s \u201cSeverance,\u201d had been hoping to appear in a Marvel movie for some time, and heard from his team that Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d wanted to meet with him. But the meeting came with a catch: \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure I had to sign NDAs even before that conversation happened,\u201d he tells GQ<\/em> in a new interview.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor found the mystery around his role \u2014 Bill Metzger, a comic-book character who opposes the X-Men and, in the MCU, will be a government official helping to mitigate the damage superheroes cause \u2014 to be challenging: \u201cIt was a little frustrating, because everything was shrouded in secrecy,\u201d he tells GQ<\/em>. \u201cSo I wasn\u2019t even sure specifically how the character would fit into the world of the movie, and I\u2019m pretty sure they had to play their cards very close to the chest because they weren\u2019t sure if I was going to accept it.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlong with Sadie Sink\u2019s Jean Grey, Metzger is a crossover from the \u201cX-Men\u201d stories into \u201cSpider-Man\u201d; Marvel brass didn\u2019t want the fact of these two worlds colliding onscreen to leak. But it presented a conundrum for an actor who didn\u2019t know what part he might be signing up for. \u201cSo we\u2019re kind of playing this back-and-forth game where I\u2019m asking Destin, \u2018Well, what can you tell me?,\u2019\u201d Tillman recalls. \u201cAnd Destin would say, \u2018It\u2019s this and that, but I can\u2019t say anything more than that.\u2019 But he told me it was a pivotal role, and that\u2019s about it. So this was a leap of faith. Do I want to jump at this opportunity or do I want to hold off and wait for another potential opportunity from Marvel?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTillman decided to take the leap, and crafted a character he compares to Barack Obama: \u201cI had this inkling that Metzger had just a little bit of swag, a little smoothness,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a fullness, a calmness, a steadiness there.\u201d And now that \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d has become the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion in total box office gross, Tillman can likely expect to reprise the role \u2014 this time knowing what he\u2019s signed up for.\u00a0<\/p>\n
