\n\tCannes\u2019 jury president, Park Chan-wook \u2014 long a Cannes favorite, never a Palme winner \u2014 managed to roast himself and plug his latest movie at the closing press conference of the 79th Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\tPark quipped that he struggled with the decision of which film should take this year\u2019s top award. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo be completely honest, I didn\u2019t want to award the Palme d\u2019Or to any of the films because it\u2019s an award that I myself have never gotten. But I had no other choice,\u201d Park Chan-wook deadpanned.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite his joke, the jury did deliver a verdict. The Palme d\u2019Or went to Cristian Mungiu\u2018s complex moral drama \u201cFjord,\u201d starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. This makes the Romanian writer-director the tenth filmmaker to win the coveted award twice \u2014 19 years after his first victory for \u201c4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe high point of the presser was Park\u2019s addressing the jury\u2019s refusal to pick favorites in two categories, handing out shared honors for both acting (for Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto in Ryusuke Hamaguchi \u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d) and directing (for Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski with \u201cFatherland,\u201d and Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi with \u201cThe Black Ball\u201d) \u2014 and Park wasn\u2019t about to apologize for it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you have seen the two films that were awarded the acting award, I\u2019m certain you\u2019d have to agree with our choices,\u201d he said. On the directing tie, he doubled down: \u201cTo emphasize this again, both filmmakers did an amazing job, and we just couldn\u2019t decide if one was better than the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPark presided over a jury that included Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Laura Wandel, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, Diego C\u00e9spedes, Isaach De Bankol\u00e9, Paul Laverty and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two U.S. Competition titles, James Gray\u2019s \u201cPaper Tiger\u201d and Ira Sachs\u2019 \u201cThe Man I Love,\u201d both left empty-hand in a year that championed European movies all the way. <\/p>\n

\n\tPark is the influential helmer behind 2000\u2019s \u201cJob Security Area\u201d and 2003\u2019s \u201cOldboy\u201d and many other films out of his native Korea. In recent years his profile has climbed in Hollywood with such projects as the HBO limited series \u201cThe Sympathizer,\u201d starring Robert Downey Jr., and the 2025 drama \u201cNo Other Choice,\u201d which had a strong arthouse run last year in the U.S. via distributor Neon.<\/p>\n

\n\tPark Chan-wook\u2019s films are no stranger to the festival. He most recently had a film in competition in 2016 with \u201cThe Handmaiden.\u201d He also served as a jury member for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n
