As a young child, she even went to space camp for a day. \u201cI sat in the little simulator, and I touched all the buttons,\u201d she recalls, her face lighting up. \u201cI want to go to adult space camp,\u201d she declares. And maybe, she\u2019ll do it. One day. But for now, Kish is the face and three-time Emmy-nominated host of Bravo\u2019s \u201cTop Chef.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=5915\">Matthew McConaughey on the Time He Helped Catch a Murderer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe was probably destined to be a chef: At age 6, she recalls using her tennis racket as a frying pan and leaves as ingredients. She jokes that she was probably the same age \u2014 or perhaps in her teens \u2014 when she first managed to cook a chicken breast and stuff it with couscous. It was \u201cbland and dry, and just the most boring bite of food ever. But that was the first time I made edible food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOn this week\u2019s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Kish talks about hosting the show, her early memories of cooking, and confidence. Also, the Roundtable looks at the outstanding variety series race, which this year could potentially have multiple winners. Will all five nominees take home an Emmy, or just one? And here\u2019s where things stand right now in the limited\/anthology race (\u201cBeef\u201d vs. \u201cDTF: St. Louis\u201d) and comedy (\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d vs. \u201cHacks\u201d). Listen below!<\/p>\n<p><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"pmc-protected-embed\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"180\" id=\"pmc-protected-embed-2\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/awards-circuit-variety\/how-many-variety-series-will-win-an-emmy-this-year-also-top-chef-host-kristen-kish-how-the-people-around-her-helped-me-get-to-a-place-where-i-felt-like-my-best-self\/embed?media=audio&amp;size=wide&amp;style=cover\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\n\tConfidence is a key theme, as Kish wrote about her struggles to fit in while growing up in her autobiography, \u201cAccidentally on Purpose.\u201d Today, Kish is the most confident version of herself in every way.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTake her iPhone, for instance. She has the newest model but doesn\u2019t use a phone case. \u201cI was a case person for a very long time, and I just wanted to be the no-case person. The only way to do it is to do it,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI do have a protective screen. It\u2019s a privacy screen, so I do drop it, and the screen cracks, and then I buy another screen protector thing. I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m living on the edge here. Maybe I\u2019ll go back to a case one day. But for now, I feel free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut reaching this point took work. \u201cSo much of my confidence came from validation of those I trust the most. Because if I couldn\u2019t see it and I was questioning myself, like, \u2018Why did I get this job?\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI think that over time, the people in my life reminded me, in very subtle ways, that I am the best person for this job. I am exactly where I should be, and I am allowed to be whatever I need to be. I don\u2019t have to fit in. I don\u2019t have to fit a mold. I don\u2019t have to be what other hosts used to be. The whole point of me stepping into this role is that I am uniquely positioned as me \u2014 as a person in the cooking industry for over 20-plus years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHaving been a contestant (Kish appeared on Season 10 of the show and went on to win), she brings a unique perspective to her hosting role. \u201cThere is a unique perspective that only I have,\u201d she notes. \u201cAnd it was reiterated time and time again through Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, our production team, and the network. The more you hear it, the more you start to believe it, and then you start to feel it. It was a journey.\u201d She adds, \u201cThey also helped me get to a place where I felt like my best self.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf there\u2019s one thing Kish has brought to \u201cTop Chef,\u201d it\u2019s her face card: tears and laughter. Kish\u2019s emotional responses have become as rewarding and heartwarming as seeing the chefs rise to their cooking challenges. This season, the show took Kish to the Carolinas. \u201cI enjoyed the cast, the arc of the winner. I mean, spoiler alert. If you don\u2019t know by now, it was Rhoda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis year, \u201cTop Chef\u201d landed four Primetime Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. \u201cI just am so proud of being part of a show that has been part of the award circuit and part Emmy nominations for however many years in a row. I don\u2019t know how many in total \u2014 a ton of them \u2014 and to be, I guess, the newbie, it\u2019s still so exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAnd then there\u2019s her love for caffeine. Make whatever you want.\u201d She adds, \u201cCook whatever you want to cook, because it\u2019s not about creating the best dish that I like with all my preferences. It\u2019s about creating the best dish that you possibly can cook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>10 QUESTIONS WITH KRISTEN KISH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>1. Childhood nickname:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cKishie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>2. Something you loved as a kid but can\u2019t believe you were into it now:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSo many cringy things! Some of my brother\u2019s clothes that I thought I looked wonderful in. My brother is 6\u20192\u2033 and eight years older than I am, and I was much smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>3. Go-to karaoke or sing-in-the-shower song:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201c\u2019I Have Nothing,\u2019 by Whitney Houston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>4. Give me an alternate title for your show:<\/strong> \u201cJust Don\u2019t Fuck It Up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>5. What\u2019s your secret talent?<\/strong>: \u201cI can play the piano. I played the trumpet and baritone, and still know how to play those things. I\u2019m also good, the model kits where you build the models of little dining scenes or whatever. I love doing those, one of my favorite hobbies. It\u2019s therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>6. Favorite ice cream flavor<\/strong>: \u201cSo many choices! Butter pecan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>7. The one item you couldn\u2019t live without<\/strong>: \u201cThis is not sponsored, but Dr. Bronner\u2019s unscented blue chapstick tube.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>8. What TV show in all of history do you wish you were a cast member of?<\/strong>: \u201cAny movie or show that is set in space. I always wanted to go to space camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>9. Fictional character you most admire<\/strong>: \u201cLet\u2019s stick with TV. In TV, we\u2019ll go \u2018Paradise.\u2019 Sterling K. Brown, big fan. I want to meet him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>10. Your favorite piece of advice<\/strong>: \u201cOne thing I learned after competing on \u2018Top Chef\u2019 was with all the self-doubt I had, I was already good enough.
