The film emerged victorious in a lineup of 17 features at the Swiss fest, including new works by auteurs including Hong Sangsoo, Denis C\u00f4t\u00e9, Ann Oren and Nelson Yeo. It was awarded by a jury headed by Belgian filmmaker Fabrice Du Welz; his fellow jurors included actors Paulina Garcia and Lolita Chammah, producer Marco Alessi and Arte France Cin\u00e9ma executive director Olivier P\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=5946\">Darren Walker Opens His Home to Friends and Anonymous Content Emmy Nominees in Celebration of \u2018Joy, Reflection, Delight and Awe\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cYou Don\u2019t Belong Here\u201d reps a return to international festival prominence for \u015eerban, whose 2010 debut feature \u201cIf I Want to Whistle, I Whistle\u201d won the Grand Prix in the 2010 Berlinale competition, but whose subject features have had less impact. The story of a respected doctor discovering that his son has committed a racially motivated murder, his latest was a consensus choice across the festival, also taking the festival\u2019s Junior Jury and Europa Cinemas Label honors. <em>Variety<\/em> critic Jay Weissberg, however, was less impressed, declaring in a mostly negative review that the film \u201copens with great promise and finishes with a stupefyingly misguided coda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVeteran Korean auteur Hong didn\u2019t leave Locarno empty-handed. Eleven years after his signature comedy \u201cRight Now, Wrong Then\u201d won the Golden Leopard, he was named Best Director for his 35th feature \u201cNowhere to Lay My Eyes,\u201d a bittersweet family-reunion study that this critic praised for being \u201cas classically and welcomingly Hong as it gets.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe director\u2019s partner and muse Kim Minhee was another repeat winner, taking the gender-neutral Best Performance award for her quietly affecting turn as an amateur filmmaker spending an awkward weekend with her estranged mother \u2014 just two years after taking the same prize in Locarno for Hong\u2019s \u201cBy the Stream.\u201d Kim shared the honor with Italian icon Monica Bellucci for her supporting role in Giovanni Tortorici\u2019s coming-of-age tale \u201cKettic\u00e8\u201d \u2014 a choice more endorsed by Weissberg, whose review celebrated the star as having \u201cfew equals in her ability to project self-aware drama queen with just the right dose of camp icon.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tRounding out the International Competition awards, Brazilian directors Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho won the Special Jury Prize for their queer erotic thriller \u201cThe Riverbank,\u201d which traces the bond between a cleaner and a fisherman on the mangrove-strewn fringes of Recife. Canadian actor Xavier Bergeron also landed a special mention for his performance in C\u00f4t\u00e9\u2019s \u201cNobody\u2019s Violence.\u201d Somewhat surprisingly overlooked by the jury, however, was festival buzz title \u201cI Rarely Wake Up Dreaming,\u201d a striking portrait of a transgender marriage amid the upheaval of the war in Ukraine from German director Isabelle Stever; it will have its North American premiere in the main slate of the New York Film Festival next month.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOutside the main competition, Argentine-American photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti\u2019s directorial debut \u201cThe Illusion of an Everlasting Summer\u201d was the big winner, taking the top prize in the festival\u2019s secondary Filmmakers of the Present competition, as well as the separately juried award for Best First Feature. A documentary filmed over the course of 25 years, it follows two closely bonded female cousins in Argentina\u2019s rural Pampas region from childhood to womanhood, and was one of the festival\u2019s word-of-mouth critical sensations; it will be distributed by Mubi in North America and the U.K. Another freshman helmer, British artist Beatrice Gibson\u2019s, was named Best Emerging Director by the Filmmakers of the Present jury for her BBC-backed hybrid doc \u201cAt Night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe 79th Locarno Film Festival will close tonight with a gala screening of French director Marc Fitoussi\u2019s meta film-industry comedy \u201cAll About Corinne,\u201d starring Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFull list of winners below:<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>INTERNATIONAL
