He is currently represented by a public defender in the double murder case that could result in life without parole or the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAt a hearing on Monday morning, Reiner\u2019s probate attorney stressed the urgency of accessing the funds so that Reiner can properly prepare for his criminal trial.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been\u00a0delay after delay after delay,\u201d said the attorney, Anita Wu. \u201cThe clock is really running on his preparation of his defense. Nick Reiner, who has been open about his struggles with addiction and mental health, was arrested later that day and charged with their murders. He pleaded not guilty last week to a grand jury indictment, which alleges special circumstances of \u201clying in wait\u201d and \u201cmultiple murders\u201d that make the case potentially eligible for the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tReiner\u2019s attorneys have been trying for several months to access about $1.5 million in a trust set up for his benefit by his parents shortly after his birth. The trustee overseeing that trust has authorized limited payments to fund previous legal bills and Reiner\u2019s jail commissary account, but has held off on allowing a more sizable outlay.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn an objection last week, the trustee noted the potential application of California\u2019s \u201cslayer statute,\u201d which would prevent Reiner from inheriting his parents\u2019 money if he is convicted of killing them. The trustee also noted that Reiner\u2019s siblings, Romy and Jake, would inherit Nick\u2019s trust should he predecease them, and thus must be involved in any resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWu expressed hope Monday that the parties could reach a global settlement via private mediation. But she also argued that setting the next hearing in October means that negotiations would be postponed to November or December.
