\n\t\u201cA Foggy Tale,\u201d directed by Chen Yu-hsun, has been selected to represent Taiwan in the best international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards, Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of Culture has revealed. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe film was chosen from seven domestic submissions by majority vote. The selection committee praised the film for its \u201cvivid characters, smooth narrative and portrayal of the era through a lively, diverse perspective of ordinary people, reflecting Taiwan\u2019s unique character while maintaining universal humanistic care,\u201d the ministry said. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA Foggy Tale\u201d is set in 1953 and follows a teenage girl from Chiayi City who travels to Taipei to retrieve the body of her brother, who has been executed by the Kuomintang government during the White Terror era. <\/p>\n

\n\tChen, a multiple Golden Horse Award winner previously behind \u201cMy Missing Valentine,\u201d opened the 2025 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival with the world premiere of \u201cA Foggy Tale.\u201d The film stars Caitlin Fang, Will Or, 9m88 and Tseng Jing-hua, and was produced under Mandarin Vision by Yeh Jufeng and Lee Lieh.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA Foggy Tale\u201d led last year\u2019s Golden Horse field with 11 nominations and went on to win four prizes at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards, including best narrative feature, best original screenplay for Chen, best art direction and best makeup and costume design. It also took five awards at the 28th Taipei Film Awards. Beyond Taiwan, the drama competed at Italy\u2019s Udine Far East Film Festival and had further outings at film festivals in Hong Kong, San Diego and Singapore.<\/p>\n

\n\tTaiwan has submitted films to the category since 1957 and has been nominated three times, all directed by Ang Lee: \u201cThe Wedding Banquet\u201d (1993), \u201cEat Drink Man Woman\u201d (1994) and \u201cCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,\u201d which won the award in 2000. Three other Taiwanese entries have reached the Academy\u2019s shortlist without going on to a nomination: \u201cWarriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale\u201d (2011), \u201cA Sun\u201d (2020) and last year\u2019s \u201cLeft-Handed Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
