The Los Angeles-based Television Academy and the New York located National Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences are run very differently, each having had 50 years to develop its own bureaucratic infrastructure. One insider tells me hundreds of items need to be ironed out before they can become one again. But that doesn\u2019t mean that they shouldn\u2019t.\n\n\t\n\n<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=6153\">Oscars Budget, \u2018Engaging\u2019 With AI and Hot Memorabilia: Inside the Academy\u2019s Annual All-Members Meeting (EXCLUSIVE)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe original Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences (which now calls itself the \u201cTelevision Academy\u201d) was founded by Syd Cassyd, an entertainment journalist who was excited by the potential of the new medium and realized it needed an industry organization. Cassyd wasn\u2019t keen on the idea of his TV academy handing out awards, but the notion soon took hold and the first Emmys (with awards just for Los Angeles TV stations) took place in 1949. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMeanwhile on the other coast, New Yorkers took notice, and Ed Sullivan launched his own TV academy in 1955. With TV becoming more of a national medium, it didn\u2019t make sense to have competing organizations \u2014 so the two merged in 1957, taking the name \u201cNational Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut over the next two decades, the tension between the org\u2019s Los Angeles and New York chapters only grew. The combined Academy was first based in New York, but then moved out west \u2014 angering the folks in Gotham. Los Angeles members thought the Academy allowed too many people to vote on the Primetime Emmys, arguing that only members working in national programming should have a say. The New York faction disagreed.\n\n\t\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tUltimately, they agreed to a divorce: The L.A. group would relaunch the Academy of TV Arts &amp; Sciences and take ownership of the Primetime Emmys and L.A.-area awards, while the National Academy of Arts &amp; Sciences would get the regional, daytime, news, documentary and sports Emmys. ATAS and NATAS came close to remerging in 2005, but wound up in another legal spat in 2008 over the idea of a broadband-centric Emmys show that NATAS wanted to launch. It wasn\u2019t until this decade, under new leadership, that the two sides started cooperating again. In recent years they\u2019ve traded categories, shared membership and done some joint marketing. NATAS has revamped rules for shows like the Daytime Emmys to mirror what the Primetime Emmys does, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat\u2019s a good start. As TV evolves into our new streaming reality \u2014 where dayparts don\u2019t matter and viewers consume content in very different ways \u2014 it doesn\u2019t make sense to have two academies attempting to do a lot of the same things. And with awards shows on the decline (the Daytime Emmys haven\u2019t even had a broadcast home since 2024), having one academy handling everything is the way to go. These are organizations with slim margins: For fiscal year 2024, the L.A.-based TV Academy earned $53.6 million in revenue, with $49.1 million in expenses, while New York\u2019s NATAS reported $9.8 million in revenue but $10.4 million in expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCombining the two would presumably save in expenses while perhaps leading to new ways to generate revenue as one larger organization. For example, with negotiations for the TV rights to the Primetime Emmys telecast underway, it probably should be bundled with the Daytime (and other) Emmys as a package deal.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI recently did the math, and I\u2019m in a profession notoriously bad at numbers, so it might not be perfect. But by my count, the TV Academy\u2019s Primetime Emmys hand out 121 awards. NATAS\u2019 Daytime, Sports, News &amp; Doc, Tech and Children\u2019s and Family Emmys give 210. The regional chapters award at least 2,040, and probably more \u2014 I lost track. That\u2019s a lot of Emmys \u2014 maybe too many.
