\n\tChristian metal band Demon Hunters have filed a lawsuit against Netflix and AEG Presents over the streamer\u2019s mega-hit animated film \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe band, which filed the lawsuit under its corporate entity Hyde Lane, has registered the \u201cDemon Hunter\u201d trademark in a number of categories and is suing for trademark infringement and unfair competition, among other claims. They have requested a jury trial.<\/p>\n

\n\tAEG Presents have been included as defendants due to their involvement in the upcoming \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d tour, which was announced earlier this year and plans to span 150 cities.<\/p>\n

\n\tFormed in 2000 in Seattle by Ryan Clark and Don Clark, Demon Hunters have released a number of studio and live albums over the past two decades, starting with their 2002 debut record \u201cDemon Hunter\u201d through to the recent \u201cThere Was a Light Here\u201d in 2025, the suit says.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt claims the Netflix film, which was released last year and tells the story of a girlband called Huntr\/x who happen to be demon slayers, has caused \u201ca substantial likelihood of confusion\u201d and resulted in an \u201cexistential crisis\u201d for the Clarks\u2019 band. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d was Netflix\u2019s most-streamed movie of 2025 with 20.5 billion viewing minutes and went on to win numerous awards including Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes. A sequel has already been greenlit and is set for release in 2029.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the lawsuit the band have provided some examples of confusion that already occurred, including an email they received in February from a man asking for a refund after he spent $500 on tickets to their gig for his 5 and 6 year-old daughters in the belief he was buying tickets to see the fictional girl band.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also cite an email received from CBS\u2019 \u201cInside Edition\u201d requesting an interview with \u201cKPop Demon Hunter\u201d songwriter Yu-Han Lee asking to speak with him about winning an Oscar.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs well as causing confusion, the band claim it has become difficult to find Demon Hunter gigs and merchandise online because the results prioritize \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHyde Lane say the inclusion of the words \u201cKPop\u201d before \u201cDemon Hunters\u201d does not \u201covercome the likelihood of confusion\u201d because \u201cKPop\u201d is too generic a term. \u201cSimply put, Netflix is no more entitled to use the mark \u2018KPop Demon Hunters\u2019 than it would be to launch a recording artist, live touring show and merchandise under the marks \u2018KPop Metallica,\u2019 \u2018KPop U2,\u2019 or \u2018KPop Black Sabbath,\u2019\u201d the lawsuit asserts. They are seeking to recover profits from Netflix and Netflix Studios as well as injunctive relief, among other remedies.<\/p>\n

\n\tA spokesperson for Netflix told Variety<\/em>: \u201cThese allegations are without merit. Netflix has created an Academy Award-winning global phenomenon with \u2018KPop Demon Hunters\u2019 that has inspired fans around the world with its powerful music, storytelling, and characters. We look forward to vigorously defending this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
